چکیده

Nitrification, denitrification and nitrate reduction rates in the sediments at two stations in Hiroshima Bay were studied seasonally from August 1994 to May 1995. The acetylene (C2H2) inhibition technique was used to evaluate the rate of these processes. The seasonal average of nitrification and denitrification rates ranged from 0.00 to 299 μg atN m–2h–1 and 0.00 to 69.0 μg atN m–2h–1, respectively. These two processes showed seasonal variations which mainly depended on the temperature of the sediment and the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the overlying water. In the present study, 11% of NO3 produced by nitrification was estimated to be denitrified as an average for a whole year. The seasonal average of NO3 reduction rate ranged from 0.00 to 794 μg atN m–2h–1. The denitrification rate accounted for only 3% of the total NO3 reduction rate.

Estimates of denitrification and nitrification in coastal and estuarine sediments.

Denitrification and nitrification in sediments of Tama Estuary and Odawa Bay, Japan, were investigated by the combined use of a continuous-flow sediment-water system and a N tracer technique. At Odawa Bay, the nitrification rate was comparable to the nitrate reduction rate, and 70% of the N(2) evolved originated from nitrogenous oxides (nitrate and nitrite) which were produced by the action of ...

Seasonal variation in nitrification and nitrate- reduction pathways in coastal sediments in the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is one of the most eutrophic marine areas in the world. The role of nitrogen as a eutrophicating nutrient in the Baltic Sea has remained controversial owing to a lack of understanding of nitrogen cycling in the area. We investigated the seasonal variation in sediment nitrification, denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to amm...

Effects of cyanobacterial-driven pH increases on sediment nutrient fluxes and coupled nitrification-denitrification in a shallow fresh water estuary

Summer cyanobacterial blooms caused an elevation in pH (9 to ∼10.5) that lasted for weeks in the shallow and tidal-fresh region of the Sassafras River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay (USA). Elevated pH promoted desorption of sedimentary inorganic phosphorus and facilitated conversion of ammonium (NH+4 ) to ammonia (NH3). In this study, we investigated pH effects on exchangeable NH+4 desorption, ...

Controls of Sediment Nitrogen Dynamics in Tropical Coastal Lagoons.

Sediment denitrification rates seem to be lower in tropical environments than in temperate environments. Using the isotope pairing technique, we measured actual denitrification rates in the sediment of tropical coastal lagoons. To explain the low denitrification rates observed at all study sites (<5 μmol N2 m-2 h-1), we also evaluated potential oxygen (O2) consumption, potential nitrification, ...

Tidal Effect on Dynamics of Pore Water Nitrate in Intertidal Sediment of a Eutrophic Estuary

To evaluate the effect of the tidal cycle on the pore water nitrate dynamics in intertidal sediment, concentrations of inorganic nitrogen in water and sediment were monitored during tidal cycles in the mud flat of Tama Estuary, Japan. During submergence, nitrate concentration was highest in the overlying water and decreased monotonically with increasing depth in the sediment, suggesting that th...
