Absorption Properties of Dissolved and Particulate Matter in Turbid Productive Inland Lakes

چکیده
The absorption coefficient of natural waters, a, is defined as the fraction of monochromatic collimated light that is absorbed per unit of path length by an infinitesimally small volume of water (Preisendorfer, 1976). a depends on wavelength and is an inherent optical property, i.e. it depends exclusively on the characteristics of the optical medium and not on the geometric structure of the light field (Preisendorfer, 1976). Beside pure water itself, three other major constituents in the water column contribute to the absorption of solar energy: colored dissolved organic matter (subscript CDOM), suspended non-algal particles (subscript nap) and phytoplankton (subscript φ) (Mobley, 1994; Kirk, 1994).

pH change induces shifts in the size and light absorption of dissolved organic matter
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) influences inland water ecosystems through its light absorbing qualities. We investigated how pH affects light absorption by DOM with pH manipulation experiments and with data from two lake surveys. We hypothesized that: (1) light absorption and photobleaching of DOM would increase with increasing pH, and (2) as a result of photobleaching, molar absorption (i.e. l...

Remote chlorophyll-a retrieval in turbid, productive estuaries: Chesapeake Bay case study
Accurate remote assessment of phytoplankton chlorophyll a (chla) concentration is particularly challenging in turbid, productive waters. Recently a conceptual model containing reflectance in three spectral bands in the red and near infra-red range of the spectrum was suggested for retrieving chla concentrations in turbid productive waters; it was calibrated and validated in lakes and reservoirs...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal drivers of dissolved organic matter in high alpine lakes: Role of Saharan dust inputs and bacterial activity.
The effects of many environmental stressors such as UV radiation are mediated by dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties. Therefore, determining the factors shaping spatial and temporal patterns is particularly essential in the most susceptible, low dissolved organic carbon (DOC) lakes. We analyzed spatiotemporal variations in dissolved organic carbon concentration and dissolved organic matte...
