VHF coherent radar signals from the E region ionosphere and the relationship to electron drift velocity and ion acoustic velocity

چکیده
[1] The Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar Experiment (STARE) coherent radar system measures the Doppler shifts caused by 1 m plasma waves in the high-latitude E region ionosphere. These Doppler velocities are here related to the electron drift velocity and ion acoustic velocity derived from measurements with the incoherent radar system European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT). The Doppler velocity is limited in magnitude to near the ion acoustic velocity in the plasma. For large flow angles q, i.e., the angle between the radar line of sight and the electron drift velocity, the Doppler shifts are equal to the component of the electron drift velocity on the line of sight. For q 40 the Doppler velocity is equal to the ion acoustic velocity at 105-km altitude, and for decreasing flow angle the Doppler velocity increases. For 0 < q < 60 the variation with flow angle can be described as cosq, where the a decreases from 0.8 to 0.2 with an increase in drift speed from 400 to 1600 ms . The ratio of the line-of-sight velocity for q 0 to the ion acoustic velocity decreases from 1.2 at low velocities to 1.05 at large velocities. The systematic variations of the Doppler shifts with drift speed and flow angle make it possible, in principle, to recover the electron velocity from the coherent radar measurements. The observations are used to illustrate how well the recovery is possible in practice.

Multi-frequency observations of E-region HF radar aurora
Multi-frequency observations of E-region coherent backscatter from decametre waves reveal that auroral echoes tend to comprise two spectral components superimposed, one at low Doppler shifts, below 250 m s−1, and the other Doppler shifted to near the ion-acoustic speed or above, up to 800 m s−1. The low Doppler shift component occurs at all look directions; Doppler shifts near the ion acoustic ...
متن کاملA classification of spectral populations observed in HF radar backscatter from the E region auroral electrojets
Observations of HF radar backscatter from the auroral electrojet E region indicate the presence of five major spectral populations, as opposed to the two predominant spectral populations, types I and II, observed in the VHF regime. The Doppler shift, spectral width, backscatter power, and flow angle dependencies of these five populations are investigated and described. Two of these populations ...
متن کاملPassive Coherent Scatter Radar Interferometer Implementation, Observations, and Analysis
We have recently extended the passive radar technique to permit interferometric observation of ionospheric irregularities. We discuss the implementation of a passive radar interferometer at VHF frequencies and show observations of field-aligned irregularities in the high latitude E-region ionosphere. The interferometer achieves very fine azimuthal resolution (as fine as 0.1◦, or 2 km at a range...

The spatial and temporal variations of various parameters associated with plasma wave turbulence in the equatorial electrojet (EEJ) at the magnetic equatorial location of Trivandrum (8.5 N, 77 E; dip 0.5 N) are studied for the first time, using co-located HF (18 MHz) and VHF (54.95 MHz) coherent backscatter radar observations (daytime) in the altitude region of 95–110 km, mostly on magnetically...
متن کاملA comparison of velocity measurements from the CUTLASS Finland radar and the EISCAT UHF system
The CUTLASS Finland radar, which comprises an integral part of the SuperDARN system of HF coherent radars, provides near continuous observations of high-latitude plasma irregularities within a ®eld-ofview which extends over some four million square kilometres. Within the Finland radar ®eld-of-view lie both the EISCAT mainland and EISCAT Svalbard incoherent scatter radar facilities. Since the CU...
