protocol so that the collective experience of many institutions will contribute to the further understanding and better management of such cases. Much more needs to be known if women with renal transplants are to be carefully selected to enjoy pregnancy and parenthood with maximum benefit to themselves and their offspring. We doubt, however, if a decision to undertake a transplant should ever be based on a desire for parenthood. J M DAVISON T LIND

Iodine excess and hyperthyroidism.
150 microg iodine are daily required for thyroid hormone synthesis. The thyroid gland has intrinsic mechanisms that maintain normal thyroid function even in the presence of iodine excess. Large quantities of iodide are present in drugs, antiseptics, contrast media and food preservatives. Iodine induced hyperthyroidism is frequently observed in patients affected by euthyroid iodine deficient goi...
متن کاملA cluster of thyrotoxicosis associated with consumption of a soy milk product.
OBJECTIVE To determine whether a New Zealand cluster of thyrotoxicosis with low uptake on scintiscan was associated with soy milk consumption. METHOD A case-control study was conducted, with controls matched by age, sex, and region. RESULTS All cases (5/5) and one control (1/30) consumed soy milk before the index date. The cases all drank a brand of soy milk that had unexpectedly high level...
متن کاملRisk of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis after coronary angiography: an investigation in 788 unselected subjects.
In this study, the risk of iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis in unselected patients from an iodine-deficient area was investigated. The patients were consecutively enrolled. Thyroid hormone values and urinary iodine excretion were determined before, as well as 1, 4 and 12 weeks after iodine contamination by coronary angiography. Two of 788 unselected patients developed hyperthyroidism within 12 wee...
متن کاملTopical Iodine–Induced Thyrotoxicosis in a Newborn with a Giant Omphalocele

Topical iodine-induced hypothyroidism has been reported in neonates, but iodine-induced neonatal hyperthyroidism has not been described; albeit a familiar entity in adults. متن کاملIodine induced thyrotoxicosis--case reports and review of literature.
Iodine in the form of Lugol's iodine is commonly prescribed for the treatment of goitre. Eighteen patients, who had positive history of ingestion of iodine are described. Some of the patients had hyperthyroidism when seen while others had thyrotoxicosis like symptoms after taking iodine. Hyperthyroidism was confirmed clinically, radio-isotopically and by response to treatment. Iodine was incrim...
متن کامل[Treatment of endemic and sporadic goiter].
Early continuous hormonal treatment, inhibiting TSH secretion, reduces the volume of recent homogeneous goiters. This treatment is usually well tolerated, but can induce thyrotoxicosis in subjects with blunted response of TSH to TRH stimulation before treatment. Surgery is used for large goiters, compressive goiters or suspicion of cancer and after failure of the hormonal treatment. In all case...
