The Syntax And Semantics Of User-Defined Modifiers In Transportable Natural Language Processor
نویسنده
چکیده
The Layered Domain Class system (LDC) is an experimental natural language processor being developed at Duke University which reached the prototype stage in May of 1983. Its primary goals are (I) to provide English-language retrieval capabilities for structured but unnormaUzed data files created by the user, (2) to allow very complex semantics, in terms of the information directly available from the physical data file; and (3) to enable users to customize the system to operate with new types of data. In this paper we shall discuss (a) the types of modifiers LDC provides for; (b) how information about the syntax and semantics of modifmrs is obtained from users; and (c) how this information is used to process English inputs.

Transportability and Generality in a Natural-Language Interface System
This paper describes the design of a transportable natural language (NL) interface to databases and the constraints that transportability places on each component of such a system. By a transportable NL system, we mean an NL processing system that is constructed so that a domain expert (rather than an AI or linguistics expert) can move the system to a new application domain. After discussing th...
متن کاملUser Specification of Syntactic Case Frames in TELI, A Transportable, User-Customized Natural Language Processor
In this paper, we present methods that allow the users of a natural language processor (NLP) to define, inspect, and modify any case frame information associated with the words and phrases known to the system. An implementation of this work forms a critical part of the Transportable English-Language Interface (TELI) system. However, our techniques have enabled customization capabilities largely...
متن کاملA Rapidly Extensible Language System (The Rel Language Processor)
languages to coexist within a single computer system. Here the term "language" is understood to include a particular data base. New languages may be defined by constructing a new base language with its syntax and semantics, by extending the terminology from a given base level in order to reflect specific concepts, or by associating a given base language with a certain data base. REL consists of...
متن کاملStraight on through to Universal Grammar: Spatial modifiers in second language acquisition
There has been considerable progress in second language (L2) research at the syntax– semantics interface addressing how syntax can inform phrasal semantics, in terms of interpretive correlates of word order (Slabakova, 2008). This article provides evidence of a flow of information ostensibly in the opposite direction, from meaning to grammar, at the interface between lexical semantics and synta...
متن کاملDesign and Implementation of an Intelligent Part of Speech Generator
The aim of this paper is to report on an attempt to design and implement an intelligent system capable of generating the correct part of speech for a given sentence while the sentence is totally new to the system and not stored in any database available to the system. It follows the same steps a normal individual does to provide the correct parts of speech using a natural language processor. It...
