Estimating Plutonium Production at Israel’s Dimona Reactor
نویسندگان
چکیده
Israel has used the Dimona reactor in the Negev Desert since the 1960s for unsafeguarded plutonium production. Estimates of cumulative historic production have been very uncertain, however, because the power level of the reactor is unknown, and there is a lack of detail about the reactor design. This analysis presents new estimates of historic plutonium production in Israel based on neutronics calculations for the Dimona reactor (“EL-102”), which is based on a modified version of the French EL-3. We estimate that cumulative production of plutonium to date is 800 ± 125 kg. The paper also includes a critical review of the 1986 testimony by the Dimona technician and whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu, which provided much of the basis for public discussion of the reactor’s power and operation.

Should Israel Close Dimona? The Radiological Consequences of a Military Strike on Israel’s Plutonium-Production Reactor
Much ink has been spilled about apprehensions in Israel and the West that Iran could develop nuclear weapons, prompting calls in American, Israeli, and now even Arab circles for the application of military force to stop the mullahs. Yet, there is another, more immediate nuclear-related danger to the Jewish state that has received far less attention: the possibility that Israel's adversaries cou...
متن کاملA Brief Sensitivity Analysis for the GIRM and Other Related Technique using a One-Group Cross Section Library for Graphite- Moderated Reactors
Several methods have been developed previously for estimating cumulative energy production and plutonium production from graphite-moderated reactors. These methods generally fall into the category of nuclear archaeology. The Graphite Isotope Ratio Method (GIRM) is one well-known technique of this type. This method is based on the measurement of trace isotopes in the reactor’s graphite matrix to...
متن کاملWeapon-Grade Plutonium Production Potential in the Indian Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor
India is building a 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, which is scheduled to be operational by 2010. India has refused to accept international safeguards on this facility, raising concerns that the plutonium produced in its uranium blankets might be used to make nuclear weapons. Based on neutronics calculations for a detailed threedimensional model of the reactor, we estimate that up to 14...
متن کاملInvestigations in Gallium Removal (ANRCP-1997-3)
Gallium present in weapons plutonium must be removed before it can be used for the production of mixed-oxide (MOX) nuclear reactor fuel. The main goal of the preliminary studies conducted at Texas A&M University was to assist in the development of a thermal process to remove gallium from a gallium oxide/plutonium oxide matrix. This effort is being conducted in close consultation with the Los Al...
متن کاملApatite II to Remediate Soil or Groundwater Containing Uranium or Plutonium
Uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu) are the two actinide elements most likely to occur as contaminants in the environment. Pu will occur only in a few localized areas associated with weapons production and processing such as Hanford, Rocky Flats and INEEL, and as a result of a very small number of releases from reactor sites such as Sellafield, Kyshtym and Chernobyl. On the other hand, U occurs at m...
