Large-eddy simulation for an axisymmetric piston-cylinder assembly with and without swirl

چکیده
Large-eddy simulation (LES) is increasingly used as a tool for studying the dynamics of turbulence in engineering flows. In LES, one explicitly captures the dynamics of the large eddies while modeling the effects of the smaller eddies on the larger ones. Because the statistics of small scale turbulence are expected to be more universal than those of the large scales, LES offers the promise of wider generality and more accurate results compared to Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) where the effects of all turbulence scales are modeled.

Examination of Initialization and Geometric Details on the Results of Cfd Simulations of Diesel Engines
Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations using the AVL Fire and Kiva 3v codes were performed to examine commonly accepted techniques and assumptions used when simulating direct injection diesel engines. Simulations of a steady state impulse swirl meter validated the commonly used practice of evaluating the swirl ratio of diesel engines by integrating the valve flow and torque history over ...
متن کاملEvaluation of CI In-Cylinder Flow using optical and numerical techniques
In order to evaluate different port concepts for modern Compression-Ignition engines, usually quantities as the swirl level and the flow coefficient are evaluated, which are measured on a stationary flow test bench. As additional criterion, in this work, the homogeneity of the swirl flow is introduced and defined quantitatively. Different valve lift strategies are evaluated using three-dimensio...
متن کاملEnhancement of Engine Performance and Reduction of Emissions by changing Piston Geometry
Internal combustion engines have been a relatively inexpensive and reliable source of power for applications ranging from domestic use to large scale industrial and transportation applications for most of the twentieth century. DI Diesel engines, having the evident benefit of a higher thermal efficiency than all other engines, have served for both lightduty and heavy-duty vehicles. In DI diesel...
متن کاملLES on unstructured deforming meshes : towards reciprocating IC enginesBy
A variable explicit/implicit characteristics-based advection scheme that is second-order accurate in space and time has been developed recently for unstructured deforming meshes (O'Rourke & Sahota 1996a). To explore the suitability of this methodology for large-eddy simulation (LES), three subgrid-scale turbulence models have been implemented in the CHAD CFD code (O'Rourke & Sahota 1996b): a co...
متن کاملCFD modeling of the in-cylinder flow in Direct-injection Diesel engine
Internal combustion engines in now a days is the best available reliable source of power for all domestic, large scale industrial and transportation applications. The major issue arises at the efficiency of these engines. Every attempt made to improve these engines tends to attain the maximum efficiency. The performances of the diesel engines are enhanced by proper design of inlet manifold, exh...
