Propagation of Uncertainty in Optimal Design of Multilevel Systems: Piston-Ring/Cylinder-Liner Case Study

چکیده
This paper proposes an approach for optimal design of multilevel systems under uncertainty. The approach utilizes the stochastic extension of the analytical target cascading formulation. The reliability of satisfying the probabilistic constraints is computed by means of the most probable point method using the hybrid mean value algorithm. A linearization technique is employed for estimating the propagation of uncertainties throughout the problem hierarchy. The proposed methodology is applied to a piston-ring/cylinder-liner engine subassembly design problem. Specifically, we assess the impact of variations in manufacturing-related properties such as surface roughness on engine attributes such as brake-specific fuel consumption. Results are compared to the ones obtained using Monte Carlo simulation.

Monotonicity, Activity and Sequential Linearization in Probabilistic Design Optimization
Design optimization under uncertainty is considered in the context of problems with probabilistic constraints. Probabilistic optimization has been studied for several years; in this dissertation, some theoretical developments in certain classes of deterministic optimization problems are extended to probabilistic ones. Specifically, the optimality conditions of probabilistic optimization and pro...
متن کاملStudy on Identification Model of Cylinder Liner-Piston Ring Using Vibration Analysis Based on Fuzzy C-means Clustering
Diesel engines have been widely used in various engineering applications. The performance of diesel engines is influenced greatly by the operation condition of the cylinder liner-piston ring. It is therefore crucial to investigate and assess the working condition of the cylinder liner-piston ring. Literature review indicated that there are few studies on this issue. Therefore, this study propos...
متن کاملInfluence of sliding surface roughness and oil temperature on piston ring pack operation of an automotive IC engine
In the paper a comprehensive model of a piston ring pack motion on an oil film has been presented. The local oil film thickness can be compared to height of the combined roughness of sliding surfaces of piston rings and cylinder liner. Equations describing the mixed lubrication problem based on the empirical mathematical model formulated in works of Patir, Cheng and Greenwood, Tripp have been c...

A running-in and starved lubrication experiment is designed to investigate the heavy-duty scuffing behavior of piston ring coatings against cast iron (Fe) cylinder liner using the piston ring reciprocating liner test rig. The scuffing resistance of the piston ring with the chromium-based ceramic composite coating (CKS), and that with the thermally sprayed nickel-chromium-molybdenum coating (NCM...
متن کاملSimulation and Modeling of Friction Force and Oil Film Thickness in Piston Ring – Cylinder Liner Assembly of an I. C. Engine
The piston ring assembly is one of the key parts of internal combustion engine. Its performance decides engine power loss to over come friction force and determines the performance of the whole engine. As per the literature review it is reported 40 to 50 % of the total mechanical friction losses in piston ring cylinder wall interface. The present work mainly focused on study of basic tribologic...
