Efficacy of dietary supplementation of bacteriophages in treatment of concurrent infections with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 and K99 in postweaning pigs

چکیده
Postweaning diarrhea or colibacillosis is a costly disease causing substantial mortality, as well as growth retardation, in swine production.1-3 Colibacillosis is typically associated with avid intestinal adhesion and fecal shedding of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). The ETEC causing diarrhea in postweaning pigs carries the F4 (K88) or F18 fimbrial antigen in most cases.4-6 The F5 (K99) antigen has also been found in postweaning diarrhea in Central China7 as well as in South Korea ( JeongHee Han, unpublished data, 2014), although piglets are less susceptible to ETEC K99 than to K88 with increasing age.8

Concurrent infection of pigs with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli of different serogroups.
Naturally occurring dual infections with Escherichia coli of different serogroups occurred in 12 pigs 2 to 14 days of age. In each case, one isolate was hemolytic and produced K88 pili and the other was nonhemolytic and produced either K99 or 987P pili.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K99 is one of the dominant pathogens associated with diarrhea of calves. Immunoglobulin Y (IgY), has been used as an inexpensive alternative to antibiotics for the prevention and therapy of several bacterial infections. The study aimed to prepare IgY antibodies against E. coli K99 and to investigate its in vitro effectiveness. E. c...
متن کاملPrevalence of pilus antigens, enterotoxin types, and enteropathogenicity among K88-negative enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli from neonatal pigs.
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) that were isolated from neonatal pigs and that did not react in preliminary tests for pilus antigen K88 were subjected to additional tests for K88 and for pilus antigens K99 and 987P. Four such isolates produced K88, 9 isolates produced K99, 55 isolates produced 987P, and the remaining 43 isolates produced none of the three pilus antigens (3P(-)). Immunof...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli isolated from neonatal calves diarrhea
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) produces different virulence factors allowing the bacterium to colonize and develop watery diarrhea. Proteomics studies have also introduced new protein belonging to the secretion pathways, antigen 43 (Ag43), which plays important role in E. coli pathogenesis. The objective of this study was to investigate O-types and virulence factors o...
متن کاملResponse of nursery pigs to a synbiotic preparation of starch and an anti-Escherichia coli K88 probiotic.
Postweaning diarrhea in pigs is frequently caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli K88 (ETEC). The aim of this study was to test the efficacy of E. coli probiotics (PRO) in young pigs challenged with E. coli K88. We also tested the synbiotic interaction with raw potato starch (RPS), which can be used as a prebiotic. Forty 17-day-old weaned piglets were randomly assigned to four treatments: t...
