چکیده
REVIEWER COMMENTS. There is growing interest in the use of probiotic supplementation to prevent or modulate atopic disease. The authors had previously shown that prenatal and postnatal probiotic supplementation with L reuteri reduced both allergic sensitization and prevalence of IgEassociated atopic dermatitis at 2 years of age. This study further demonstrated a general reduction in production of both T helper cells 1 and 2 cytokines in the subjects treated with Lactobacillus, prompting the authors to suggest a possible mechanism for their previous findings. A weaknesses of this study is the failure to correlate allergen and mitogen cytokine responses with probiotic treatment and clinical outcomes in this patient group. In addition, the study cannot account for the variation in size or timing of exposures to eggs, birch, or cat that certainly affects the likelihood of sensitization and peripheral mononuclear cell responsiveness. Various effects on the immune system have been demonstrated after probiotic treatment; this study would seem to add support for the immunomodulating effect of Lactobacillus supplementation in pregnancy and early childhood, although more research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms involved.

متن کاملDo hypoallergenic cats and dogs exist?
s t c o n A s e f P l The prevalence of human allergy to pets has increased over the past 6 decades, with the most frequently reported animal sensitivity to cats and dogs. The United States has the highest percentage of household pets in the world, and the numbers continue to increase, with approximately 62% of US households having 1 or more domestic pets. Of the households with cats, 17% of th...
متن کاملPrevalence of and risk factors for increased serum levels of allergen-specific IgE in a population of Norwegian dogs
BACKGROUND The importance of different allergens in association with IgE production and canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) has been poorly studied and few studies exist on factors influencing allergen-specific IgE antibodies in serum. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the prevalence of elevated IgE levels to different environmental allergens in Norwegian dogs with a suspicion...
متن کاملParent-reported environmental exposures and environmental control measures for children with asthma.
BACKGROUND Mounting evidence suggests that indoor allergens and irritants contribute to childhood asthma. National asthma guidelines highlight the importance of their reduction as part of comprehensive asthma treatment. OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence of potential environmental triggers, to identify risk factors for such exposures, and to determine whether prior parental education about t...

Nødtvedt A. 2007. Epidemiology of canine atopic dermatitis. Doctoral thesis. ISSN 1652-6880, ISBN 978-91-576-7346-6 Canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is a chronic, allergic skin disease associated with IgEmediated reactions to environmental allergens. Atopic dermatitis/eczema in humans shares many similarities with CAD and is an increasing problem in industrialized countries. This increase has bee...
