چکیده

Diffraction and interference are optical phenomena which split light into its component wavelengths, hence producing a full spectrum of iridescent colors. This paper develops comput er graphics models for iridescent colors produced by diffractive media. Diffraction gratings, certain animal skins and the crystal structure of some precious stones are known to produce diffraction. Several techniques can be employed to derive solutions to the diffraction problem including: (1)Electromagnetic boundary value methods (2)Applying the Huygens-Fresnel principle (3)Applying the Kirchoff-Fresnel theorem (4)Fourier optics. Previous work in developing diffraction models for computer graphics has used boundary value methods and Fourier optics but no models using HuygensFresnel principle have been published. This paper derives a set of diffraction solutions based on the Huygens -Fresnel principle, which are then used to extend well-known illumination models and are incorporated into a ray tracer.

Rendering Iridescent Colors Appearing on Natural Objects

Iridescent colors appearing on natural objects, such as the feathers of a hummingbird, surfaces inside seashells, and shells of beetles, are beautiful and impressive. The cause of such iridescent colors is interference of light inside multilayer film structures covering the natural objects. This paper proposes a method for realistically rendering iridescent colors appearing on natural surfaces,...

Rendering Iridescent Colors of Optical Disks

The iridescent colors observed on objects such as optical disks are caused by light diffraction from their surface microstructure. We show that when an optical disk is illuminated by a light source it typically displays a major highlight strip of colors diagonally across the disk, consisting of saturated colors that vary along the strip, and a pair of weak strips of unsaturated colors that chan...

Physically-Based Real-Time Diffraction Using Spherical Harmonics

Diffraction, interference, dispersive refraction and scattering are four wavelength-dependent mechanisms that produce iridescent colors. The per-wavelength sampling required to render iridescence significantly increases the computation required to render iridescence in real time. Furthermore, diffraction exhibits much higher frequencies and sharper peak responses than interference and dispersiv...

Wave optical algorithm for creating digitally synthetic holograms of three-dimensional surface objects

Progress in a novel wave-optical algorithm for synthesizing object waves of three-dimensional surface objects is reported. The algorithm has been proposed last year and has a feature of wave-optical calculation in diffraction by object surfaces. Numerical simulation of diffraction is implemented by a method based on coordinates rotation in Fourier spectrum. Source fields on a surface of objects...

Iridescence: a functional perspective.

In animals, iridescence is generated by the interaction of light with biological tissues that are nanostructured to produce thin films or diffraction gratings. Uniquely among animal visual signals, the study of iridescent coloration contributes to biological and physical sciences by enhancing our understanding of the evolution of communication strategies, and by providing insights into physical...
