چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Demineralized bone matrix derived from human tissues has demonstrated the ability to aid in the stimulation of an osteoinductive response allowing for improved bone growth and fusion. In an effort to augment the available grafting material as well as increase fusion rates, the utilization of a demineralized bone matrix (DBM) as a graft extender or even as a graft substitute has become commonplace. A variety of human DBM composites are commercially available, but no comparative studies exist examining their relative effectiveness in spinal fusion. The athymic rat offers a unique animal model with the advantage of a non-immunogenic environment for in vivo evaluation of fusion. The purpose of this study was to compare the osteoinductive ability between three commercially available human DBMs to heal a spinal fusion.

Demineralized bone matrix and spinal arthrodesis.

Spinal fusion is a gold-standard treatment for many disorders of the spine with autogenous bone graft as the gold-standard source for augmenting fusion. However, the morbidity and limitations of autogenous bone grafting has motivated the search for bone graft alternatives. One such alternative is demineralized bone matrix (DBM). The purpose of this paper is to describe and characterize the prop...

Stabilizing Effects of a Particulate Demineralized Bone Matrix in the L4 Interbody Space with and without PEEK Cage - A Literature Review and Preliminary Results of a Cadaveric Biomechanical Study.

We reviewed the biological elements supporting the usefulness of a specifically designed particulate form of demineralized bone matrix (DBM) with spinal fusion, and report some limitations of its use described in the medical literature and in the interbody space using a cadaveric biomechanical model. A literature review and description of the techniques used to augment spinal fusion are present...

Augmentation of Spinal Fusion with a Demineralized Bone/hyaluronan Matrix

INTRODUCTION Autogenous iliac crest bone graft continues to be the material of choice for posterolateral lumbar intertransverse process spine fusion. However, continued interest lies in developing bone graft alternatives that can be used as either graft extenders, graft enhancers, or graft substitutes. It was the purpose of this study to evaluate the efficacy of a demineralized bone matrix/ hya...

Porous and Bioactive PEEK Implants for Interbody Spinal Fusion

Back and radicular pain is the leading cause of activity and productivity loss amongst adults of any age in the United States [Ref. 1]. In many cases, surgical intervention is required, including at least 5,000 interbody spinal fusion cages implanted each month in the U.S. alone [Ref. 2]. The total U.S. market for spinal fusion implants was valued at nearly $4 billion in 2008 [Ref. 3]. Interbod...

Comparison of posterolateral lumbar fusion rates of Grafton Putty and OP-1 Putty in an athymic rat model.

STUDY DESIGN Posterolateral lumbar spine fusions in athymic rats. OBJECTIVES To compare spine fusion rates of two different osteoinductive products. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Many osteoinductive bone graft alternatives are available. Grafton (a demineralized bone matrix [DBM]) and Osteogenic Protein-1 (OP-1, an individual recombinant bone morphogenetic protein) are two such alternatives. T...
