Using high-speed op amps for high-performance RF design, Part 1
نویسنده
چکیده
Why use op amps for RF design? Traditional RF design techniques using discrete transistors have been practiced successfully for decades. RF designers who are comfortable with things “as-is” will scrutinize introduction of a new design technique using op amps. The cost of high-speed op amps, in particular, will raise eyebrows. Why replace a transistor that costs a few cents with a component that may cost several dollars? This is a valid question to ask for high-volume consumer goods; and, in almost every case, the answer will be to stay with traditional techniques. For high-performance RF equipment, however, high-speed op amps have some distinct advantages. Many other applications have migrated to op amps to take advantage of the superior performance they provide. It is reasonable to assume that high-speed applications such as RF will also make the move. This article will be presented in two parts. Part 1 focuses on the actual topology of RF stages formed with op amps and the scattering parameters. Part 2 will focus on some fine points of RF design and more specifications unique to RF.

Although most modern monolithic solid state operational amplifiers (op-amps) are internally compensated, externally compensated units provide an invaluable degree of freedom to analog designers. As a result, these op-amps offer true 'general purposeness,' since allowing the user to choose the amplifier's compensation can drastically improve performance in many applications. This thesis proposes...

As CMOS technology continues to evolve, the supply voltages are decreasing while at the same time the transistor threshold voltages are remaining relatively constant. Making matters worse, the inherent gain available from the nano-CMOS transistors is dropping. Traditional techniques for achieving high gain by vertically stacking (i.e. cascoding) transistors becomes less useful in sub-100nm proc...

The need for high bandwidth operational amplifiers (op amp) exists for numerous applications. This need requires research in the area of op amp bandwidth extension. The exploited method in this thesis uses a class of compensation called Indirect Feedback Frequency Compensation in which the compensation current is fed back indirectly from the output to an internal high impedance node, to extend ...

The design of high-accuracy analogue circuits is becoming a difficult task with the scaling down of supply voltages and transistor channel lengths of the current mixed-signal integrated circuits. Most of this kind of circuits require the use of the highestperformance active cell: the operational amplifier (op amp). Designers are continuously working toward tradeoff solutions between gain, input...
