Promoting Interaction in Large Classes with Computer-mediated Feedback

چکیده
Eliciting student participation in large college classes is difficult yet critical to learning. This paper describes a design experiment with the Classroom Feedback System (CFS), a computer-mediated feedback system for promoting class interaction. We delineate challenges to interaction based on successive background and pilot studies. CFS addresses these challenges by enabling students to post annotations (e.g., MORE EXPLANATION) directly on lecture slides. The instructor sees the annotations in real time. Evidence from a large lecture study shows that CFS enhances interaction by addressing challenges to interaction.

Promoting Interaction in Large Classes with a Computer-Mediated Feedback System
Eliciting student participation in large college classes is notoriously difficult yet critical to learning. This paper describes a design experiment with a computer-mediated feedback system for promoting class interaction. We delineate specific challenges to interaction and propose design principles to address them in computer-mediated systems. A prototype realizing these principles establishes...
متن کاملOn the Differential Effects of Computer-Mediated and Metalinguistic Corrective Feedback on Iranian EFL Learners’ Writing Accuracy
The present study investigated differential effect of two types of feedback namely, computer-mediated and metalinguistic, on Iranian EFL learners’ writing accuracy. To this end, based on Nelson Proficiency Test (300 A), 69 Iranian advanced EFL learners, including 45 males and 24 females, aged between 17 and 24, learning English in language institutes in Salmas, were selected randomly out of the...
متن کاملThe Effect of Asynchronous versus Computer-mediated Corrective Feedback on the Correct Use of English Articles in an EFL Context
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of asynchronous computer-mediated versus conventional corrective feedback on learners' writing accuracy. Three groups of learners took part in the study: asynchronous feedback group, conventional feedback group, and a control group. Asynchronous feedback group students received explicit feedback on the targeted structure via e-mail, while...
متن کاملElicitation, Recast, and Meta-Linguistic Feedback in Form-Focused Exchanges: Effects of Feedback Modality on Multimedia Grammar Instruction
This research explores the effects of three computer-mediated feedback modalities, that is, elicitation, recast, and meta-linguistics, on the learning of English participial, gerund, and infinitival phrases among Iranian intermediate-level EFL learners. The overriding focus of the present study was to investigate whether different types of feedback given through form-focused computer-human exch...
متن کاملThe Effect of Scaffolded Written Corrective Feedback on Iranian EFL Learners’ Writing Quality: An Activity Theory Perspective
With the latest paradigm shift in SLA from Cognitivism to Sociocultural Theory (SCT), more studies are carried out to investigate the efficacy of Written Corrective Feedback (WCF) through a social and cultural lens. A more recent offspring of SCT is Activity Theory which provides an explanatory framework for scrutinizing an activity in a social setting. The present study aimed at investigating ...
