Fair Representation in the Intersection of Two Matroids

چکیده
Mysteriously, hypergraphs that are the intersection of two matroids behave in some respects almost as well as one matroid. In the present paper we study one such phenomenon the surprising ability of the intersection of two matroids to fairly represent the parts of a given partition of the ground set. For a simplicial complex C denote by β(C) the minimal number of edges from C needed to cover the ground set. If C is a matroid then for every partition A1, . . . , Am of the ground set there exists a set S ∈ C meeting each Ai in at least b |Ai| β(C)c elements. We conjecture that a slightly weaker result is true for the intersection of two matroids: if D = P ∩Q, where P,Q are matroids on the same ground set V and β(P), β(Q) 6 k, then for every partition A1, . . . , Am of the ground set there exists a set S ∈ D meeting each Ai in at least 1 k |Ai| − 1 elements. We prove that if m = 2 (meaning that the partition is into two sets) there is a set belonging to D meeting each Ai in at least ( 1 k − 1 |V |)|Ai| − 1 elements.

Some lower bounds for the $L$-intersection number of graphs
For a set of non-negative integers~$L$, the $L$-intersection number of a graph is the smallest number~$l$ for which there is an assignment of subsets $A_v subseteq {1,dots, l}$ to vertices $v$, such that every two vertices $u,v$ are adjacent if and only if $|A_u cap A_v|in L$. The bipartite $L$-intersection number is defined similarly when the conditions are considered only for the ver...

Let a topological space. An intersection graph on a topological space , which denoted by , is an undirected graph which whose vertices are open subsets of and two vertices are adjacent if the intersection of them are nonempty. In this paper, the relation between topological properties of and graph properties of are investigated. Also some classifications and representations for the graph ...
متن کاملQuery Lower Bounds for Matroid Intersection
We consider the number of queries needed to solve the matroid intersection problem, a question raised by Welsh (1976). Given two matroids of rank r on n elements, it is known that O(nr) independence queries suffice. Unfortunately, very little is known about lower bounds for this problem. This paper describes three lower bounds which, to our knowledge, are the best known: 2n− 2 queries are neede...
متن کاملOn the intersection of infinite matroids
We show that the infinite matroid intersection conjecture of NashWilliams implies the infinite Menger theorem proved recently by Aharoni and Berger. We prove that this conjecture is true whenever one matroid is nearly finitary and the second is the dual of a nearly finitary matroid, where the nearly finitary matroids form a superclass of the finitary matroids. In particular, this proves the inf...
متن کاملParallel Complexity for Matroid Intersection and Matroid Parity Problems
Let two linear matroids have the same rank in matroid intersection. A maximum linear matroid intersection (maximum linear matroid parity set) is called a basic matroid intersection (basic matroid parity set), if its size is the rank of the matroid. We present that enumerating all basic matroid intersections (basic matroid parity sets) is in NC, provided that there are polynomial bounded basic m...
