Evolutionary uniformitarianism.

چکیده
I present a new compilation of the distribution of the temporal distribution of new morphologies of marine invertebrates associated with the Ediacaran-Cambrian (578-510 Ma) diversification of Metazoa. Combining this data with previous work on the hierarchical structure of gene regulatory networks, I argue that the distribution of morphologies may be, in part, a record of the time-asymmetric generation of variation. Evolution has been implicitly viewed as a uniformitarian process where the rates may vary but the underlying processes, including the types of variation, are essentially invariant through time. Recent studies demonstrate that this uniformitarian assumption is false, suggesting that the types of variation may vary through time.

Untangling Uniformitarianism, Level 1: A Quest for Clarity
An assessment of the meaning and role of uniformitarianism in natural history is demanded by: (1) the confusion it has generated for nearly two centuries, (2) the recent revolution in geology that has rejected traditional uniformitarianism in favor of neocatastrophism, and (3) the accusation by some who embrace neocatastrophism that diluvialists—failing to understand nuances of uniformitarianis...
متن کاملUntangling Uniformitarianism, Level II: Actualism in Crisis
Uniformitarian geology has opposed biblical history for over two centuries. Most creationist critiques focus on contrary empirical evidence, but this series pursues a logical and axiomatic critique of the “four-definition” formulation of uniformitarianism. Three of these facets—stasis, gradualism, and generic uniformity—fail to support the concept. The remaining “uniformity of process,” also ca...
متن کاملMicrowear evidence for Plio–Pleistocene bovid diets from Makapansgat Limeworks Cave, South Africa
Makapansgat Limeworks Cave is a well-known Australopithecus africanus bearing locality that has spawned a considerable amount of paleoecological research because of its hominin component. Most recently, the paleoecology of this Plio–Pleistocene site has been studied by determining the diet and habitat of other extinct taxa, particularly the bovids. The diets of seven bovids (Aepyceros sp., Gaze...
متن کاملJae Jung Song, Linguistic typology: morphology and syntax (Longman
The back cover of this book characterizes it as ‘an up-to-date critical introduction to linguistic typology’. The title might suggest that it gives equal coverage to morphology and syntax, but it is mainly about syntax. Chapter 1, ‘Introducing linguistic typology’, is a useful introduction to typology. For someone new to the area, it lays out the object of linguistic typology and discusses some...
