An Estimator of Edge Length and Surface Area in Digitized 2D and 3D Images

چکیده
Existing estimators for edge length in 2D and surface area in 3D are applied to a binary representation of the object. In this paper we estimate length and area through volume measurements. Volume is measured without thresholding and does not introduce a sampling error. Edges are transformed into volumes by giving them a constant height after which they can be shifted perpendicular to the edge over a small distance. Subtraction of two images shifted in opposite direction produces a volume that is proportional to the edge length. To guarantee a constant edge height along the edge or across the surface to be measured we apply a “soft” clipping operation to the linear region of the edge. For accurate and isotropic displacement of edges we introduce a continuous space equivalent to the discrete local minimum and maximum filters. These filters are sampling invariant and allow shifts in the subpixel region.

Introdouction: The aim of this study was to compare information regarding pharyngeal airway sizes in adolescent subjects with different malocclusion classes obtained from lateral cephalograms and 3–dimensional (3D) cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Materials and methods: In this prospective cross-sectional study, CBCT scans and lateral cephalograms of 35 subjects, taken with...
متن کاملMeasurements of digitized objects with fuzzy borders in 2D and 3D
The results of our investigation of several measurements on digitized 2D and 3D objects with fuzzy borders are presented. The performance of surface area, volume, and roundness measure estimators for digitized balls with fuzzy borders is analyzed. The method we suggest provides significant improvement in precision, compared to analogous estimation results obtained on a crisp (hard) segmentation...
متن کاملFusion and display of 3D SPECT and MR images registered by a surface fitting method
Since 3D medical images such as SPECT and MRI are taken under different patients positioning and imaging parameters, interpretation of them, as reconstructed originally, does not provide an easy and accurate understanding of similarities and differences between them. The problem becomes more crucial where a clinician would like to map accurately region of interest from one study to the ot...
متن کاملExtended ratio edge detector for despeckled SAR image evaluation
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images due to the usage of coherent imaging systems are affected by speckle. So lots of despeckling filters have been introduced up to now to suppress the speckle. Hence, objective and subjective evaluation of the denoised SAR images becomes a necessity. Thereby lots of objective evaluating estimators are introduced to evaluate the performance of despeckling filte...
متن کاملEvaluation of a fast method of EPID-based dosimetry for IMRT and Comparison with 3D EPID-based dosimetry system using conventional two- and three-dimensional detectors for VMAT
Introduction: Electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) could potentially be useful for intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and VMAT QA. The data density, high resolution, large active area, and efficiency of the MV EPID make it an attractive option. However, EPIDs were designed as imaging devices, not dosimeters, and as a result they do not inherently measure dose in ...
