چکیده

A method for retrieval of leaf area index (LAI) using ENVISAT ASAR VV/HH polarisation ratio was derived for boreal forests. The swath range from IS1 to IS6 was studied. The VV/HH polarization ratio correlated quite well with the ground truth LAI values. The coefficient of determination was 0.76 for the sites when data from all 5 summer images and stands were used without separating between species (or swaths). The respective coefficient of determination was 0.7 for spruce (Picea abies L.) dominated stands and for pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) dominated stands it was even higher.

Subarctic Boreal Forest Albedo Estimation Using Envisat/asar and Spot

Optical satellite albedo observations of forests suffer from understory contamination, but C-band microwave reacts mostly with the canopy. This paper studies whether or not adding ASAR backscattering information could enhance optical albedo retrieval accuracy. We compare SPOT-4-retrieved reflectances combined with ASAR backscattering ratios with solely optically retrieved SPOT-4 NIR albedo, and...

Envisat Asar Wide Swath Backscatter Dynamics of the Siberial Boreal Forest Fire Scar

Wildfires significantly affect the boreal ecosystem of Siberia. However, records on burnt areas and fire impact are still not satisfactory in Russia. The dense smoke from active burning and the persistent cloud covers impeded the application of optical sensors to the detection of burnt area in Siberia forest during the summer fire season. The high resolution SAR data are of limited use for burn...

Envisat/asar Vv/hh Backscattering and the Radiation Characteristics of Subarctic Boreal Forest

Surface albedo estimates based on optical and microwave satellite data were compared to corresponding ground based values in a Subarctic boreal forest test site. The ground based albedo values were derived from radiation measurements carried out at the forest floor using an albedo model and measured global and diffuse radiation data. The use of both optical and microwave satellite data turned o...

Estimates of Forest Growing Stock Volume for Sweden, Central Siberia, and Québec Using Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar Backscatter Data

A study was undertaken to assess Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) ScanSAR data for quantifying forest growing stock volume (GSV) across three boreal regions with varying forest types, composition, and structure (Sweden, Central Siberia, and Québec). Estimates of GSV were obtained using hyper-temporal observations of the radar backscatter acquired by Envisat ASAR with the BIOMASA...

Tree Shape Description for Backscattering Modelling of Lai

Several radiative techniques have been developed for inverse estimation of the leaf area indes (LAI) using optical data measured below the canopy (e.g. hemispherical photography) or above the canopy (remote sensing). In the inversion, a model of the three-dimensional distribution of leaves in the canopy is used to define the required relation between LAI and canopy transmittance and reflectance...
