Experienced old eyes can look young in HCI research

چکیده
Eye-tracking studies have demonstrated that older people tend to exhibit poorer visual engagement with screen-based technologies than young adults; notably slower eye movements and longer fixation durations. The assumption has been that these findings are attributable to physiological and cognitive degradation associated with normal aging [1]. In other words, reduced performance is inevitable and predictable by chronological age. The size of these effects can be task dependent, but evidence across a range of HCI tasks suggests that computer experience can reduce age-related differences in viewing behaviour [2]. Eye-movement patterns and distributions for experienced older adults are remarkably close to those for younger adults carrying out similar tasks. And within a sample of older adults (n=18, age range: 70-93), even a minimal level of computer familiarity is enough to create significantly distinguishable groups. This implies that treating all older adults as a single cohort is a gross oversimplification. Additionally, in many usability studies these visual aspects of interaction are confounded by physical performance difficulties, such as mouse control or typing. Models of visual behaviour and eye movements should therefore consider computer experience as a variable as well as age. BODY When experience is controlled for, older adults’ eye movements resemble younger adults. Age alone is less important than previously assumed.

Investigating the Impact of Dual Task Condition and Visual Manipulation on Healthy Young Old During Non-Dominant Leg Stance
Objectives: The dominant leg has always received special attention in public health practices and even in professional clinical evaluation and interventions. The aim of this research study was to methodically examine the substrate balance character of the non-dominant leg under dual task conditions and visual deprivation to increase the baseline insight for maintaining body balance and for fall...
متن کاملEye Juggling: A Methodology for Interpreting Stories Eye Juggling Outline
There is an old man, with long, black braids. He stands there, beside that tall cedar tree, singing a song. As he sings that song, what should happen..., his eyes pop out of his head. He continues singing that song and his eyes go up the side of the tree to the top branch. There those eyes look to the east. Then they turn and look to the south. The old man with empty sockets in his head continu...
متن کاملKashan of Two Era from the Eyes of Two Western Women
So far, the history of Kashan has been viewed through the eyes of many travelers, but these eyes have rarely been eyes of women travelers. Depicting Kashan’s situation in Naseri and Pahlavi era from writings of two women, who came from cultural archeologic families, is an important source of recognizing Kashan, which is analyzed in this article. This critical analysis is conducted with the assu...
متن کاملAttentional Demands of Balance Under Dual Task Conditions in Young Adults
Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the role of attentional process in postural control using choice reaction time task while changing the visual and proprioceptive cues under difficult balance task (standing on one-leg). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted by participating 20 young people (22.75±2.29). Each subject performed one-leg standing as balance task for e...
متن کاملStereopsis outweighs gravity in the control of the eyes.
The eyes are controlled by multiple brain circuits, some phylogenetically old and some new, whose aims may conflict. Old otolith reflexes counterroll the eyes when the head tilts relative to gravity. Newer vergence mechanisms coordinate the eyes to aid stereoptic vision. We show that counterroll hinders stereopsis, weakly when you look into the distance but strongly when you look near. The reso...
