Conceptualising the geographic world: the dimensions of negotiation in crowdsourced cartography
نویسندگان
چکیده
In crowdsourced cartographic projects, mappers coordinate their e↵orts through online tools to produce digital geospatial artefacts, such as maps and gazetteers, which were once the exclusive territory of professional surveyors and cartographers. In order to produce meaningful and coherent data, contributors need to negotiate a shared conceptualisation that defines the domain concepts, such as road, building, train station, forest, and lake, enabling the communication of geographic knowledge. Considering the OpenStreetMap Wiki website as a case study, this article investigates the nature of this negotiation, driven by a small group of mappers in a context of high contribution inequality. Despite the apparent consensus on the conceptualisation, the negotiation keeps unfolding in a tension between alternative representations, which are often incommensurable, i.e., hard to integrate and reconcile. In this study, we identify six complementary dimensions of incommensurability that recur in the negotiation: (i) ontology, (ii) cartography, (iii) culture and language, (iv) lexical definitions, (v) granularity, and (vi) semantic overload and duplication.

Crowdsourced cartography: mapping experience and knowledge
This paper considers the emerging phenomenon of crowdsourced cartography in relation to ideas about the organisation of contemporary knowledge production in capitalist societies. Taking a philosophical perspective that views mapping as a processual, creative, productive act, constructed through citational, embodied, and contextual experiences, we examine how we might profi tably analyse collabo...
متن کاملCartography in a Gameful Context
Maps shape our view of the world and help us in our everyday lives to orient in unfamiliar territory. The art of creating maps however was reserved to a privileged group of people for a long time. Today’s progresses in technology have opened it to anyone with internet access, as free crowdsourced projects have emerged, dedicated to create an open map of the world. However, editing the map and c...

A significant share of classroom interaction occurs between teachers and language learners. Therefore, the individual characteristics of teachers could play facilitative or impeding roles thus encouraging or discouraging learners from getting engaged in interaction and meaning negotiation attempts when interacting with their teachers. Surprisingly however, this area has attracted scant attentio...
متن کاملGeographic Summaries from Crowdsourced Data
In this paper, we present a research prototype for creating geographic summaries using the whereabouts of Foursquare users. Exploiting the density of the venue types in a particular region, the system adds a layer over any typical cartography geographic maps service, creating a first glance summary over the venues sampled from the Foursquare knowledge base. Each summary is represented by a conv...
متن کامل1 Scale in a Digital Geographic World
The representative fraction, the metric traditionally used by cartographers to characterize the level of geographic detail in a map, is not well-defined for digital geographic data. Increasingly complex and unsatisfactory conventions are needed to preserve this legacy of earlier technology. A series of requirements is defined for replacement metrics. For digital representations of fields six ca...
