Inconsistency without Contradiction

چکیده

1. Genuine worlds, ersatz worlds David Lewis has argued that impossible worlds are nonsense. 1 If there were such worlds, one would have to distinguish between the truths about their contradictory goings-on and contradictory falsehoods about them. One would have to distinguish between, say, the alleged truth (1a) In so-and-so world pigs can fly; and in that world pigs also cannot fly, and the contradictory falsehood (1b) In so-and-so world pigs can fly; and it is not the case that, in that world, pigs can fly. But this—Lewis argues—is preposterous: there is no such distinction to be drawn. (1a) and (1b) are equivalent. Of course, Lewis does distinguish between the following: 2 (2a) In the world of Sherlock Holmes, Watson limps; and in that world Watson also does not limp. (2b) In the world of Sherlock Holmes, Watson limps; and it is not the case that, in that world, Watson limps. (2b) is contradictory. But (2a) is, in a sense, true: there is a discrepancy in Conan Doyle's writings. In one of the Holmes stories, Watson limps because

Formalizing common sense for scalable inconsistency-robust information integration using Direct Logic(TM) reasoning and the Actor Model

People use common sense in their interactions with large information systems. This common sense needs to be formalized so that it can be used by computer systems. Unfortunately, previous formalizations have been inadequate. For example, classical logic is not safe for use with pervasively inconsistent information. The goal is to develop a standard foundation for reasoning in large-scale Interne...

On logics of formal inconsistency and fuzzy logics

Paraconsistency is the study of logics (as deductive systems) having a negation operator ¬ such that not every contradiction {φ,¬φ} trivializes or explodes. In other words, a paraconsistent logic is a logic having at least a contradictory, non-trivial theory. Among the plethora of paraconsistent logics proposed in the literature, the so-called Logics of Formal Inconsistency (LFIs), proposed in ...

A Note concerning the Place of Contradictions in the Ontologies of Constitution

In this first section we start with defining the notions of inconsistency and para-consistency, we give an example of an inconsistency and clarify what according to us is the basic problem with respect to the occurrence of inconsistencies. We are then in a position to state the aim of this paper. We have a contradiction when both A and ∼ A are true.1 We have negation-incompleteness when neither...

On Incompatibility Relations as Models of Potential Conflicts in Knowledge Based Systems

In recent years, some interesting research on Inconsistency Checking in Knowledge Based Systems has been developed [2-7, 10]. An inconsistency is defined as a possible input that will allow the Knowledge Based System to derive a contradiction. Possible input means that the situation represented by this input happens in the real world. A contradiction will be produced when at least two output fa...

Paraconsistency Everywhere

Paraconsistent logics are, by definition, inconsistency tolerant: In a paraconsistent logic, inconsistencies need not entail everything. However, there is more than one way a body of information can be inconsistent. In this paper I distinguish contradictions from other inconsistencies, and I show that many different logics are in an important sense, “paraconsistent” in virtue of being inconsist...

The simple liar without bivalence?

1. Background The Simple Liar is a sentence that says of itself only that it is false. The Strengthened Liar is a sentence that says of itself only that it is not true. How does the Strengthened Liar differ from its (allegedly) weaker brother, namely, the Simple Liar? According to standard thinking the Simple Liar, unlike the Strengthened Liar, yields inconsistency only if the following princip...
