چکیده

A grand unified model (GUM) is developed to achieve fundamental understanding of rich structures of all 71 liganded gold clusters reported to date. Inspired by the quark model by which composite particles (for example, protons and neutrons) are formed by combining three quarks (or flavours), here gold atoms are assigned three 'flavours' (namely, bottom, middle and top) to represent three possible valence states. The 'composite particles' in GUM are categorized into two groups: variants of triangular elementary block Au3(2e) and tetrahedral elementary block Au4(2e), all satisfying the duet rule (2e) of the valence shell, akin to the octet rule in general chemistry. The elementary blocks, when packed together, form the cores of liganded gold clusters. With the GUM, structures of 71 liganded gold clusters and their growth mechanism can be deciphered altogether. Although GUM is a predictive heuristic and may not be necessarily reflective of the actual electronic structure, several highly stable liganded gold clusters are predicted, thereby offering GUM-guided synthesis of liganded gold clusters by design.

Gravitational corrections to fermion masses in grand unified theories

There are several hints that the strong and electroweak forces unify at some very large energy typically assumed to be at around 10 GeV. The quantum fields of the standard model fit nicely into simple representations of a grand unified theory [1] such as e.g. SUð5Þ or SOð10Þ. The idea of unification is extremely attractive for several reasons. For example, a grand unification drastically reduce...

Synthesis, characterization and optical properties of low nuclearity liganded silver clusters: Ag31(SG)19 and Ag15(SG)11.

We report a simple synthesis of silver:glutathione (Ag:SG) clusters using a cyclic reduction under oxidative conditions. Two syntheses are described which lead to solutions containing well-defined Ag31(SG)19 and Ag15(SG)11 clusters that have been characterized by mass spectrometry. The optical properties of silver:glutathione (Ag:SG) cluster solutions have been investigated experimentally. In p...

Status of Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories

We begin with a brief discussion of the building blocks of supersymmetric grand unified theories. We recall some of the compelling theoretical reasons for viewing supersymmetric grand unification as an attractive avenue for physics beyond the standard model. This is followed by a discussion of some of the circumstantial evidence for these ideas. Invited Speaker at the XII DAE Symposium on High ...

A UNIFIED MODEL FOR RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM WITH UNCERTAIN ACTIVITY DURATIONS

In this paper we present a unified (probabilistic/possibilistic) model for resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with uncertain activity durations and a concept of a heuristic approach connected to the theoretical model. It is shown that the uncertainty management can be built into any heuristic algorithm developed to solve RCPSP with deterministic activity durations. The esse...

A SUSY SU(5) Grand Unified Model of Tri-Bimaximal Mixing from A4

We discuss a grand unified model based on SUSY SU(5) in extra dimensions and on the flavour group A4 × U(1) which, besides reproducing tri-bimaximal mixing for neutrinos with the accuracy required by the data, also leads to a natural description of the observed pattern of quark masses and mixings. e-mail address: [email protected] e-mail address: [email protected] e-mail address: hagedo...
