Why and how to use statins in the perioperative period?
نویسنده
چکیده
There is growing evidence that statin use is associated with a reduction in perioperative morbidity and mortality. Statins inhibit 3-hydroxy3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase, a mechanism that effectively reduces low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Numerous randomized controlled studies have shown that this intervention effectively impedes the development of atherosclerosis and attenuates cardiovascular risk in nonsurgical patients. Interestingly, at relatively high doses statins also improve short term outcome in patients with acute coronary events. The latter is more difficult to relate to the change in circulating lipoproteins and triglycerides. Similarly, the proposed beneficial effects of statins in the perioperative period are unlikely to result only from a modification in lipid profile and other interesting explanations have been forwarded.

متن کاملDo Statins Improve Lung Function in Asthmatic Patients? A Randomized and Double-Blind Trial
There are evidences that statins have anti-inflammatory effects beyond their cholesterol lowering properties. The study was conducted to assess the effects of atorvastatin on asthma as an inflammatory disease. Patients with moderate to severe asthma were entered this randomized, double blind, crossover clinical trial. The impact of oral atorvastatin (10 mg/day) on the lung function of nor...
متن کاملMajor studies of the use of statins before noncardiac surgery
■ ■ Preliminary evidence indicates that statin drugs may be beneficial when given in the perioperative period. Although more studies are needed to draw firm conclusions, the acute nonlipid pleiotropic effects of statins may improve patient outcomes, especially for patients at the highest risk.
