چکیده

has developed a rigorous, technology-based learning environment that assists and assesses (hence, " assistments ") middle school students in Earth, Life, and Physical Science so that teachers can assess their students' skills rigorously, frequently, and in the context in which they are developing, namely, during instruction (Mislevy et al, 2002). Our program of work represents a significant advance over other programs that utilize pencil and paper assessments because ours makes use of a state-of-the art logging infrastructure to do web-based tutoring and assessment (Razzaq et al, 2005). Our learning environment Science Assistments (www.scienceassistments.org;) scaffolds middle school students' scientific inquiry skills, namely, hypothesizing, designing and conducting experiments, interpreting data, warranting claims with evidence, and communicating findings.

Teaching Philosophy for Children (P4C) Using a Community of Inquiry Method and its Impact on Students’ Interpersonal Relations

To improve the personal relations among students the use of community of inquiry method was hypothesized to be effective, especially if the content being learned in this way is Philosophy for Children (P4C). To find support for this hypothesis, a group of 50 female students whose interpersonal relations were below the average was selected and then divided into two subgroups of experimental and ...

Using Text Replay Tagging to Produce Detectors of Systematic Experimentation Behavior Patterns

We present machine-learned models that detect two forms of middle school students’ systematic data collection behavior, designing controlled experiments and testing the stated hypothesis, within a virtual phase change inquiry learning environment. To generate these models, we manually coded a proportion of the student activity sequence clips using “text replay tagging” of log files, an extensio...

Background / Context: Description of prior research and its intellectual context. The National frameworks for science emphasize inquiry skills (NRC, 1996), however, in typical classroom practice, science learning often focuses on rote learning in p...

Identifying Students' Inquiry Planning Using Machine Learning

This research investigates the detection of student meta-cognitive planning processes in real-time using log tracing techniques. We use fine and coarse-grained data distillation, in combination with coarse-grained text replay coding, in order to develop detectors for students’ planning of experiments in Science Assistments, an assessment and tutoring system for scientific inquiry. The goal is t...

Assessing the Learning and Transfer of Data Collection Inquiry Skills Using Educational Data Mining on Students’ Log Files

In this paper we explored whether engaging in two inquiry skills associated with data collection, designing controlled experiments and testing stated hypotheses, within microworlds for one physical science domain (density) impacted the acquisition of inquiry skills in another domain (phase change). To do so, we leveraged educational data mining techniques to both assess and estimate students’ i...
