چکیده

The present paper discusses a coupled gridded crop modeling and hydrologic modeling system that can examine the benefits of irrigation and costs of irrigation and the coincident impact of the irrigation water withdrawals on surface water hydrology. The system is applied to the Southeastern U.S. The system tools to be discussed include a gridded version (GriDSSAT) of the crop modeling system DSSAT. The irrigation demand from GriDSSAT is coupled to a regional hydrologic model (WaSSI). GriDSSAT and WaSSI are coupled through the USDA NASS CropScape data to provide crop acreages in each watershed. The crop model provides the dynamic irrigation demand which is a function of the weather. The hydrologic model responds to the weather and includes all other anthropogenic competing uses of water. Examples of the system include an analysis of the hydrologic impact of future expansion of irrigation and the real-time impact of short-term drought. © 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Software availability The GriDSSAT model presented in this paper was developed with the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology (DSSAT), a software application program that comprises crop simulation models for over 28 crops and is supported by data base management programs for soil, weather, and crop management and experimental data, and by utilities and application programs. The latest version can be obtained free at: http://www.dssat.net. The WaSSI model is an integrated, process-based model that was originally developed by the U.S. Forest Service. Coupling Biophysical Processes and Water Rights To Simulate Spatially Distributed Water Use in an Intensively Managed Hydrologic System

Humans have significantly altered the redistribution of water in intensively managed hydrologic systems, shifting the spatiotemporal patterns of surface water. Evaluating water availability requires integration of hydrologic processes and associated human influences. In this study, we summarize the development and evaluation of an extensible hydrologic model that explicitly integrates water rig...

Integrated Hydrologic-Agronomic-Economic Model for River Basin Management

The interdisciplinary nature of water resources problems requires the integration of technical, economic, environmental, social, and legal aspects into a coherent analytical framework. This paper presents the development of a new integrated hydrologicagronomic-economic model in the context of a river basin in which irrigation is the dominant water use and irrigation-induced salinity presents a ...

Is current irrigation sustainable in the United States? An integrated assessment of climate change impact on water resources and irrigated crop yields

While climate change impacts on crop yields has been extensively studied, estimating the impact of water shortages on irrigated crop yields is challenging because the water resources management system is complex. To investigate this issue, we integrate a crop yield reduction module and a water resources model into the MIT Integrated Global System Modeling framework, an integrated assessment mod...

Hydrologic Modeling of a Canal-Irrigated Agricultural Watershed with Irrigation Best Management Practices: Case Study

Simulating irrigation systems by accounting for various water loss rates is necessary while modeling the hydrology of cultivated canal-irrigated watersheds. The existing approaches to modeling canal irrigation use situation-specific optimization procedures. In addition, they are focused on a water management perspective rather than a hydrologic perspective. In this study, an approach is develop...

Assessment of Agricultural Water Management in Punjab, India, Using Bayesian Methods

The success of the Green Revolution in Punjab, India, is threatened by a significant decline in water resources. Punjab, a major agricultural supplier for the rest of India, supports irrigation with a canal system and groundwater, which is vastly overexploited. The detailed data required to estimate future impacts on water supplies or develop sustainable water management practices is not readil...
