Genetic Studies of Lysogenicity in Escherichia Coli 1 Esther

چکیده
R ECENT research on Escherichiu co& phages has outlined the biology of viruses that promptly lyse their bacterial hosts (DELBR~~CK 1950). In addition to the progressive parasitic relationship that these studies have analyzed, many phage-bacterium complexes persist in a more enduring symbiosis, lysogenicity. The experiments to be described in this paper were designed to probe two related questions : how is the virus of a lysogenic bacterium transmitted in vegetative and sexual reproduction? and how is a symbiotic complex established following infection by the virus, as an alternative to the parasitization and lysis of the host bacterium ? Complementary problems, especially concerning the growth and release of virus in lysogenic bacteria have received more emphasis from other workers (BERTANI 1951; LWOFF and GUTMAKN 1950; WEIGLE and DELBR~~CK 1951). ,

متن کاملThe establishment of lysogenicity in Escherichia coli.
When a population of sensitive bacteria is exposed to infection by a temperate phage, a large number of cells are not lysed and give rise to colonies containing lysogenic cells. Some of the factors influencing the probability that an infected cell of Escherichia coli, strain K12S, will give a lysogenic response are reported here. In addition, the present study deals with the change of free phag...

In studies on antibiotic susceptibility and resistance carried on in our laboratory"0' "2 l , we have found it advantageous on numerous occasions to employ auxotrophic mutants derived from Escherichia coli, strain K 12, since appropriate resistant mutants could be recombined for further analysis of genetic relationships. The demonstration8"6 that this strain is often lysogenic for a phage X has...
متن کاملFunctional motifs in Escherichia coli NC101
Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria can damage DNA of the gut lining cells and may encourage the development of colon cancer according to recent reports. Genetic switches are specific sequence motifs and many of them are drug targets. It is interesting to know motifs and their location in sequences. At the present study, Gibbs sampler algorithm was used in order to predict and find functional m...
متن کاملGenetic variation among Escherichia coli isolates from human and calves by using RAPD PCR
Background: Various strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) are known as major causes of intestinal and extraintestinal infections in humans and various animal species. Molecular methods are important for the identification of bacterial isolates and nucleotide sequence variations, as well as information on tracking bacterial agents related to the outbreaks, the frequency of the bacterial genetic ...
