dunce, a mutant of Drosophila deficient in learning.

چکیده
Normal Drosophilia learn to avoid an odorant associated with electric shock. An X-linked mutant, dunce, has been isolated that fails to display this learning in spite of being able to sense the odorant and electric shock and showing essentially normal behavior in other respects.

Rescue of the learning defect in dunce, a Drosophila learning mutant, by an allele of rutabaga, a second learning mutant.
rutabaga1 (rut1), a Drosophila learning mutant, has adenylate cyclase (EC 4.6.1.1) with reduced basal activity and the absence of calcium/calmodulin-stimulated activity. A second learning mutant, dunce, is defective in cyclic AMP degradation due to decreased or absent phosphodiesterase activity. These opposing biochemical defects allow rut1 to partially suppress the female sterility caused by e...
متن کاملSexual hyperactivity and reduced longevity of dunce females of Drosophila melanogaster.
The dunce gene of Drosophila melanogaster codes for a cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate-specific phosphodiesterase. Mutations of dunce alter or abolish the activity of this enzyme, produce elevated cAMP levels, cause recessive female sterility, and produce learning deficiencies in both sexes. Aberrant male sexual behavior has also been associated with the memory defects of dunce mutants. Her...

BACKGROUND Mutations that cause learning and memory defects in Drosophila melanogaster have been found to also compromise visual responsiveness and attention. A better understanding of attention-like defects in such Drosophila mutants therefore requires a more detailed characterization of visual responsiveness across a range of visual parameters. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We designed an ...
متن کاملAltered synaptic plasticity in Drosophila memory mutants with a defective cyclic AMP cascade.
Synaptic transmission was examined in Drosophila mutants deficient in memory function. These mutants, dunce and rutabaga, are defective in different steps of the cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) cascade. In both dunce and rutabaga larvae, voltage-clamp analysis of neuromuscular transmission revealed impaired synaptic facilitation and post-tetanic potentiation as well as abnormal resp...
متن کاملDefective cyclic adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate phosphodiesterase in the Drosophila memory mutant dunce.
A detailed characterization of the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDEs) from normal Drosophila melanogaster was made, including purification of the two major enzymes to near homogeneity. A third more labile phosphodiesterase also was identified in crude homogenates. The total activity per fly of one of these three enzymes, PDE-II, is strongly influenced by the dunce locus. Two independent...
