Monsoon^tropical ocean interaction in a network of coral records spanning the 20th century

چکیده
The 20th century evolution of basin-wide gradients in surface ocean properties provides one essential test for recent models of the interaction between the Asian monsoon and the tropical ocean, because various feedback mechanisms should result in characteristic regional patterns of variability. Although the instrumental record of climate variability in the tropics is essentially limited to the last few decades, the stable isotopic composition of living corals provides an effective means for extending the instrumental observations. Here we present two coral isotopic records from the Indonesian Maritime Continent, and we use these records with other previously published records to describe: (i) the relationship between western Pacific and central Pacific climate variability over the past century, with special emphasis on the biennial band; and (ii) the strength of the west^east ‘Indian Ocean Dipole’. We find that the amplitude of the biennial cycle in the Pacific did not vary inversely with the strength of ENSO (El Nin‹o Southern Oscillation), as might be expected from some models of monsoonal feedback on the central Pacific. Instead, the biennial variability was modulated on decadal timescales throughout much of the Pacific. We also show that the zonal oxygen isotopic gradient in the Indian Ocean coral records was significantly correlated with central Pacific sea surface temperature on a variety of timescales. Thus, it is likely that this ‘coral dipole’ was a product of strong ENSO-like teleconnections over the Indian Ocean, as opposed to being the result of unique Indian Ocean or monsoonal

Interaction Between the ENSO and the Asian Monsoon in a Coral Record of Tropical Climate
The oxygen isotopic composition of a banded coral from the western equatorial Indian Ocean provides a 150-year-long history of the relation between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon and the Asian monsoon. Interannual cycles in the coral time series were found to correlate with Pacific coral and instrumental climate records, suggesting a consistent linkage across ocean basins, d...
متن کاملA 780-year annually resolved record of Indian Ocean monsoon precipitation from a speleothem from south Oman
[1] Meteorological records of monsoon rainfall in the Indian Ocean are generally less than 100 years long. The relative brevity of these records makes it difficult to investigate monsoon variation on decadal and centennial timescales, to determine what factors influence the intensity of rainfall on these timescales, or to place possible changes in the twentieth century into a broader historical...
متن کاملCoral records of central tropical Pacific radiocarbon variability during the last millennium
[1] The relationship between decadal to centennial changes in ocean circulation and climate is difficult to discern using the sparse and discontinuous instrumental record of climate and, as such, represents a large uncertainty in coupled ocean‐atmosphere general circulation models. We present new modern and fossil coral radiocarbon (DC) records from Palmyra (6°N, 162°W) and Christmas (2°N, 157°...
متن کاملGrowth of Western Australian corals in the anthropocene.
Anthropogenic increases of atmospheric carbon dioxide lead to warmer sea surface temperatures and altered ocean chemistry. Experimental evidence suggests that coral calcification decreases as aragonite saturation drops but increases as temperatures rise toward thresholds optimal for coral growth. In situ studies have documented alarming recent declines in calcification rates on several tropical...
متن کاملAcceleration of modern acidification in the South China Sea driven by anthropogenic CO2
Modern acidification by the uptake of anthropogenic CO2 can profoundly affect the physiology of marine organisms and the structure of ocean ecosystems. Centennial-scale global and regional influences of anthropogenic CO2 remain largely unknown due to limited instrumental pH records. Here we present coral boron isotope-inferred pH records for two periods from the South China Sea: AD 1048-1079 an...
