چکیده

An atomic force microscope ~AFM! with an ultrasharp tip was used to directly measure the sidewall profile of InP/InGaAsP waveguide structures etched using an inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching ~ICP-RIE! in Cl2-based plasma. A special staircase pattern was devised to allow AFM tip to access the etched sidewall of the waveguides in the normal direction. Statistical information such as correlation length and rms roughness of the sidewall profile obtained through three-dimensional imaging by AFM has been presented. rms roughness as low as 3.45 nm was measured on the sidewall of 4-mm-deep etched InP/InGaAsP heterostructures. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1627480#

Atomic Force Microscopy Sidewall Imaging with a Quartz Tuning Fork Force Sensor

Sidewall roughness measurement is becoming increasingly important in the micro-electromechanical systems and nanoelectronics devices. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is an emerging technique for sidewall scanning and roughness measurement due to its high resolution, three-dimensional imaging capability and high accuracy. We report an AFM sidewall imaging method with a quartz tuning fork (QTF) for...

Polymer waveguide end facet roughness and optical input/output coupling loss for OPCB applications

Electro-optical printed circuit board technology (EOCB) based on integrated planar polymer optical waveguides has been the subject of research and development for many years to provide a cost viable, fully integrated system embedded optical interconnect solution, however a number of constraints of this technology have yet to be overcome. Optical coupling loss at the input and output of the wave...

Optical loss reduction in high-index-contrast chalcogenide glass waveguides via thermal reflow.

A thermal reflow technique is applied to high-index-contrast, sub-micron waveguides in As(2)S(3) chalcogenide glass to reduce the sidewall roughness and associated optical scattering loss. We show that the reflow process effectively decreases sidewall roughness of chalcogenide glass waveguides. A kinetic model is presented to quantitatively explain the sidewall roughness evolution during therma...

Morphological, structural and photoresponse characterization of ZnO nanostructure films deposited on plasma etched silicon substrates

ZnO nanostructure films were deposited by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering on etched silicon (100) substrates using dry Ar/SF6 plasma, at two etching times of 5 min and 30 min, and on non etched silicon surface. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) technique was employed to investigate the elements contents for etched substrates as well as ZnO films, where it is found to be stoichiometric. Su...

Application of Scanning Electron and Atomic Force Mode Microscopy on inscription from Proto-Elamite period in Tappeh Sofalin

The study of cultural heritage artifacts and the research of a protection and restoration intervention create with - and are often limited to - a complete characterization of their surface. This is not only factual for museum objects, but also for archaeological artifacts, because the object as it was discovered may contain precious unknown information that could be lost by too much aggressive ...
