Isolated Magnetar Spin-down, Soft X-ray Emission and Rxj1856.5-3754

چکیده
When an isolated magnetar with magnetic dipole field B ∼ 10 G moves at high velocity (v > 10 cm s) through the ISM, its transition into propeller effect driven spin-down may occur in less than 10 years. We propose that the nearby neutron star RXJ1856.5-3754 is such a magnetar, and has spun down by the propeller effect to a period greater than 10 sec within ∼ 5 × 10 years. This magnetar scenario is consistent with observed thermal X-ray emission properties and the absence of detectable spinmodulations of them. Detection of other rapidly moving long period (> 100 sec) magnetars with known ages would strongly constrain the very great variety of predicted propeller-effect torque magnitudes. Thermal emission from low-field neutron stars
We present a new grid of LTE model atmospheres for weakly magnetic (B <∼ 10 10 G) neutron stars, using opacity and equation of state data from the OPAL project and employing a fully frequency and angle dependent radiation transfer. We discuss the differences to earlier models, including a comparison with a detailed NLTE calculation. As a first application of the new synthetic spectra, we re-ana...

The enigma source, RX J1856.5-3754, is one of the so-called dim thermal neutron stars. Two puzzles of RXJ1856.5-3754 exist: (1) the observational X-ray spectrum is completely featureless; (2) the UV-optical intensity is about seven times larger than that given by the continuation of the blackbody model yielded by the X-ray data. Both the puzzles would not exist anymore if RX J1856.5-3754 is a l...
متن کاملGrb 080503 Late Afterglow Re-brightening: Signature of a Magnetar-powered Merger-nova
GRB 080503 is a short gamma-ray burst (GRB) detected by Swift and has been classified as a GRB originating from a compact star merger. The soft extended emission and the simultaneous late re-brightening in both the X-ray and optical afterglow light curves raise interesting questions regarding its physical origin. We show that the broadband data of GRB 080503 can be well explained within the fra...
متن کاملIs RXJ1856.5-3754 an old neutron star?
An unusual X-ray source, RX J1856.5-3754, has recently been discovered with ROSAT: its spectrum resembles that of supersoft sources, but the very high X-ray to optical flux ratio excludes the presence of a companion star, pointing to an isolated compact object. It has been proposed that RX J1856.53754 is an old, isolated neutron star accreting from the interstellar medium. Here we present a rea...
متن کاملA Magnetar-like Outburst from a High-b Radio Pulsar
Radio pulsars are believed to have their emission powered by the loss of rotational kinetic energy. By contrast, magnetars show intense X-ray and γ-ray radiation whose luminosity greatly exceeds that due to spin-down and is believed to be powered by intense internal magnetic fields. A basic prediction of this picture is that radio pulsars of high magnetic field should show magnetar-like emissio...
