Comparing Axiomatic and Ecological Theories of Rationality: The Case for an Internalist Ecological Rationality
نویسنده
چکیده
The realization in the last century that observed human behavior often deviates from the predictions of traditional axiomatic theories of rationality (henceforth “TATs”), e.g. [6],[8], has led to a revival of the philosophical problem of developing a credible philosophical theory of rationality. In particular, the concept of ecological rationality (“ECO”) has been developed as a competitor to TATs. I adopt a very general and abstract formalism, known as SCOP [2], that can provide a comprehensive representation of human reasoning as our minds interact with the outside world; I then use this formalism to define, compare, and evaluate our competing theories of rationality. I use this analysis to argue that, while ECO improves on TATs, in part by looking further into people’s minds, a truly satisfactory theory of rationality must embrace internalism, go deeper into people’s minds, and consider agents’ justification for their decisions on a still deeper level. I thus conclude by arguing for an internalist ECO.

The consistency and ecological rationality approaches to normative bounded rationality
This paper focuses on tacit versus explicit uses of plural performance metrics as a primary methodological characteristic. This characteristic usefully distinguishes two schools of normative analysis and their approaches to normative interpretations of bounded rationality. Both schools of thought make normative claims about bounded rationality by comparing the performance of decision procedures...
متن کاملInvestigating the Rationality of Behavioral Economics in Mental Accounting by Studying Laboratory Economics
The purpose of this study is to investigate the rationality of behavioral economics in mental accounting by studying laboratory economics. Undoubtedly, economic man, whose fundamental characteristic is rationality, is the starting point for economic analysis. In conventional economics, the premise of rationality is the cornerstone and the premise of all economic theories. However, critics of ec...
متن کاملEmergence of scale-free characteristics in socio-ecological systems with bounded rationality
Socio-ecological systems are increasingly modelled by games played on complex networks. While the concept of Nash equilibrium assumes perfect rationality, in reality players display heterogeneous bounded rationality. Here we present a topological model of bounded rationality in socio-ecological systems, using the rationality parameter of the Quantal Response Equilibrium. We argue that system ra...
متن کاملThe Analysis of Fatalism and Rationality in Oral Literature (Case of Study: Kurdish Oral Literature)
Fatalism and Rationality are two separate valuable attributes. In Rationalism and rationality, the active and creative role of human is emphasized, meaning ignorance aversion, imagination aversion, illusion removal and superstition removal. This concept is the opposite of the concept of fatalism in which human has the minimum activity and the emphasis is very much on the role of trans-physics i...
متن کاملBehind and beyond a shared definition of ecological rationality: A functional view of heuristics
a r t i c l e i n f o Observing human behavior in laboratories reveals time and again the undeniable influence of social components, even in the isolation of carefully designed experiments. Clearly, social and cultural constructs shape human cog-nition. The study of ecological rationality recognizes the importance of specifying these and other characteristics of the environment as a basis of co...
