چکیده

Article history: Received 12 November 2009 Received in revised form 27 July 2010 Accepted 28 July 2010 Available online 6 August 2010 We provide new evidence that differences in international tax rates and tax regimes affect multinational firms' debt location decisions. Our sample contains 8287 debt issues from 2437 firms headquartered in 23 different countries with debt-issuing subsidiaries in 59 countries. We analyze firms' marginal decisions of where to issue debt to investigate the influence of a comprehensive set of tax-related effects, including differences in personal and corporate tax rates, tax credit and exemption systems, and bi-lateral cross-country withholding taxes on interest and dividend payments. Our results show that differences in personal and corporate tax rates, the presence of dividend imputation or relief tax systems, the tax treatment of repatriated profits, and inter-country withholding taxes on dividends and interest significantly influence the decision of where to locate debt and the proportion of debt located abroad. Our results are robust to firm and issue specific factors and to the effect of legal regimes, debt market development, and exchange rate risk. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Multinational Corporate Financing and Foreign Exchange Parity Relations

Given the increasing importance of financing in foreign currency denominated debt, researchers have shown the conditions under which raising capital denominated in a foreign currency becomes feasible. We extend this literature in the context of a multinational corporation (MNC) by modeling the rivalry between equity and debt under a modified general equilibrium framework. We derive (i) internat...

On Fiscal Illusion in Local Public Finance: Re-examining Ricardian Equivalence and the Renter Effect

We reevaluate fi scal illusion in local public fi nance. The Ricardian Equivalence Theorem suggests that the fi nancing of a public program using either taxation or debt shouldn’t affect outcomes, because debt is capitalized into property values. In contrast, we show individuals may rationally prefer public debt if governments can borrow on more favorable terms. We also propose a new test for t...

This paper examines the impact of indirect (non-income) taxes on FDI by American multinational firms, using affiliate-level data that permit the introduction of controls for parent companies and ...

Do Personal Taxes affect Corporate Financing Decisions?

The traditional view is that interest deductibility encourages firms to use debt financing; however, some argue that the personal tax disadvantage to interest offsets the corporate tax advantage. This paper investigates the degree to which personal taxes affect corporate financing decisions. In crosssectional regressions that control for personal taxes, debt usage is positively correlated with ...

The Changing Nature of Debt and Equity: A Financial Perspective

Historically, corporations have mainly financed their activities with two securities, debt and equity. The stockholders have responsibility for the operation of the firm through the election of the board of directors; the dividends they receive in return for their subscription of capital are not guaranteed and are paid at the discretion of the board of directors. In contrast, debtholders are pr...
