چکیده

The technique of simultaneous localization and mapping is the most important research topic in mobile robotics. In the process of building a map in its available memory, the robot memorizes environmental information on the plane of grid or topology. Several approaches about this technique have been presented so far, but most of them use mapping technique as either grid-based map or topology-based map. In this paper we propose a frame of solving the SLAM problem of linking map covering, map building, localizing, path finding and obstacle avoiding in an automated way. Some algorithms integrating grid and topology map are considered and they make the SLAM performance faster and more stable. The proposed scheme uses an occupancy grid map in representing the environment and then formulates topological information in path finding by Dijikstra algorithm. The mapping process is shown and the shortest path is decided on grid based map. Then topological information such as direction, distance are calculated on a simulator program then transmitted to robot hardware devices. The localization process and the dynamic obstacle avoidance can be accomplished by topological information on the grid map. While mapping and moving, pose of the robot is adjusted for correct localization by implementing additional pixel based image layer and tracking features. A laser range finder and electronic compass systems are implemented on the mobile robot and DC geared motor wheels are individually controlled by PD based adaptive way. Simulations and experimental results show performance and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Gamma-SLAM: Stereo Visual SLAM in Unstructured Environments Using Variance Grid Maps

We introduce a new method for stereo visual SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) that works in unstructured, outdoor environments. Observations use dense stereo vision to measure the variance of the heights in each cell of a 2D grid. Unlike other grid-based SLAM algorithms, which use occupancy grid maps, our algorithm uses a new mapping technique that maintains a posterior distribution ...

Map-merging in Multi-robot Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Process Using Two Heterogeneous Ground Robots

In this article, a fast and reliable map-merging algorithm is proposed to produce a global two dimensional map of an indoor environment in a multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) process. In SLAM process, to find its way in this environment, a robot should be able to determine its position relative to a map formed from its observations. To solve this complex problem, simultan...

Performance of 6D LuM and FFS SLAM — An Example for Comparison using Grid and Pose Based Evaluation Methods

The focus of this paper is on the performance comparison of two simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms namely 6D Lu/Milios SLAM and Force Field Simulation (FFS). The two algorithms are applied to a 2D data set. Although the algorithms generate overall visually comparable results, they show strengths & weaknesses in different regions of the generated global maps. The question we...

Square Root Unscented Particle Filtering for Grid Mapping

In robotics, a key problem is for a robot to explore its environment and use the information gathered by its sensors to jointly produce a map of its environment, together with an estimate of its position: so-called SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) [13]. Various filtering methods – Particle Filtering, and derived Kalman Filter methods (Extended, Unscented) – have been applied success...

A Direct Power Feeding System for AC Railway Networks Using Modular Multilevel Converter

Abstract Traditional railway power supply systems impose substantial power quality problems (PQ) on the utility network, such as unbalance, harmonics and a large amount of reactive power. This paper proposes a topology based on three-phase to single-phase modular multilevel converters (MMC) to obviate these problems. The MMC based traction substations (TSS) are connected directly to the utili...
