Tricked by Truncation: Spurious Duration Dependence and Social Contagion in Hazard Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
W show both analytically and through Monte Carlo simulations that applying standard hazard models to right-truncated data, i.e., data from which all right-censored observations are omitted, induces spurious positive duration dependence and hence can trick researchers into believing to have found evidence of social contagion when there is none. Truncation also tends to deflate the effect of time-invariant covariates. These results imply that not accounting for right truncation can lead managers to rely too much on word of mouth in generating new product adoption and to poorly identify the customers most likely to adopt early. Not accounting for right truncation can also lead to suboptimal pricing decisions and to erroneous assessments of variations in customer lifetime value. We assess the effectiveness of four possible solutions to the problem and find that only using an analytically corrected likelihood function protects one against truncation artifacts inflating coefficients of contagion and attenuating coefficients of time-invariant covariates.

Diffusion Processes and Event History Analysis
Several authors (e.g., Brüderl, Diekmann, Yamaguchi) derive hazard rate models of event history analysis from social diffusion processes. This paper also focuses on the integration of diffusion research and survival analysis. After a discussion of Diekmann’s flexible diffusion model, we present an alternative approach which clarifies theoretical differences between popular rate models (e.g., th...
متن کاملEvidence for complex contagion models of social contagion from observational data
Social influence can lead to behavioural 'fads' that are briefly popular and quickly die out. Various models have been proposed for these phenomena, but empirical evidence of their accuracy as real-world predictive tools has so far been absent. Here we find that a 'complex contagion' model accurately describes the spread of behaviours driven by online sharing. We found that standard, 'simple', ...
متن کاملEstimation of Hazard Models with Dependence Across Observations: Correlation, Frailty and Contagion
This paper proposes nonparametric and semi-nonparametric estimation of hazard models with various types of dependence between observations. The methods are designed to examine the impact that di¤erent macroeconomic and nancial conditions have on hazard rates. First, dependence between time-varying covariate processes across observations is examined. Among other possibilities, covariate process...
متن کاملGrouped Mixed Proportional Hazard Models with Social Interactions
In this paper we develop mixed proportional hazard models in discrete time when there is cross sectional duration dependence because of the social interactions. To capture the cross sectional dependence, we use the lagged binary indicators of neighbors, which are weighted by the spatial weight matrix. We investigate the nonparametric specification for the baseline hazard and the unobserved hete...
متن کاملLagged Duration Dependence in Mixed Proportional Hazard Models
Lagged Duration Dependence in Mixed Proportional Hazard Models We study the non-parametric identification of a mixed proportional hazard model with lagged duration dependence when data provide multiple outcomes per individual or stratum. We show that the information conveyed by the within strata variation can be exploited to nonparametrically identify lagged duration dependence in more general ...
