The two-person beauty contest

چکیده

We introduce a two-person beauty contest game with a unique Nash equilibrium that is identical to the game with many players. However, iterative reasoning is unnecessary in the two-person game as choosing zero is a weakly dominant strategy. Despite this “easier” solution concept, we find that a large majority of players do not choose zero. This is the case even with a sophisticated subject pool. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. How do Multi-player Beauty Contest Games affect the Level of Reasoning in Subsequent Two Player games?

Behavioural economists have employed beauty contest games in order to test for agents’ depth of reasoning. In multi-player beauty contest games, fully rational players should all bid zero. In experiments, it is observed that average bids are consistently much greater than zero, which may reflect a population of players consisting of a combination of full and bounded rationality. In contrast, in...

Agent-based modeling and experimental economics: exploring the behaviors behind the outcomes

A series of experiments was conducted on a single set of subjects to investigate learning and correlated responses. Altruism was inferred from an ultimatum game, learning was inferred by comparing the results of two successive beauty contest experiments, and iterative thinking was inferred from the beauty contest results. This paper presents a process for numerically modeling the experimental p...

A Window of Cognition: Eyetracking the Reasoning Process in Spatial Beauty Contest Games

We introduce a two-person “beauty contest” game played spatially on a twodimensional plane. Players choose locations and are rewarded by hitting "targets" dependent on opponents’ locations. By tracking subjects’ eye movements (termed the lookups), we infer their reasoning process. Analyzing both final choices and lookups, we classify subjects into various types based on a level-k model. More th...

Directed altruistic living donation: what is wrong with the beauty contest?

This paper explores the specific criticism of directed altruistic living organ donation that it creates a 'beauty contest' between potential recipients of organs. The notion of the beauty contest in transplantation was recently used by Neidich et al who stated that '[a]ltruism should be the guiding motivation for all donations, and when it [is], there is no place for a beauty contest'. I examin...

Rational Reasoning or Adaptive Behavior? Evidence from TwoPerson Beauty Contest Games

Many experiments have shown that human subjects do not necessarily behave in line with game theoretic assumptions and solution concepts. The reasons for this non–conformity are multiple. In this paper we study the argument whether a deviation from game theory is because subjects are rational, but doubt that others are rational as well, compared to the argument that subjects, in general, are bou...
