Event-driven Seismic Interferometry with Ambient Seismic Noise
نویسنده
چکیده
SUMMARY By cross-correlating recordings of ambient seismic noise, one can retrieve the subsurface reflection response. The quality of the retrieved reflections would depend on the qualities of the ambient noise. In a previous study, we cross-correlated ambient-noise data recorded in a desert area in North Africa and showed that we retrieved reflections. This was done assuming that body-wave noise continuously illuminates the recording array. But this is not necessarily true-noise which carries body-wave information can be present only at certain times. We now use only parts of the recorded noise during the correlation process. These parts contain identifiable body-wave events. We show that the results, retrieved only from the noise containing the events, exhibit clearer reflection arrivals.

Coda-wave interferometry is a technique to detect small seismic velocity changes using phase changes in similar waveforms from repeating natural or artificial sources. Seismic interferometry is another technique for detecting seismic velocity changes from cross-correlation functions of ambient seismic noise. We simultaneously use these two techniques to clarify seismic velocity changes at Sakur...
متن کاملTime-lapse monitoring of internal erosion in earthen dams and levees using ambient seismic noise
Earthen dams and levees are prone to progressive failure through internal erosion of their structure. Internal erosion is often invisible to current methods of inspection until it manifests itself at the exterior surface. This study focuses on the novel use of passive seismic interferometry to monitor temporal changes in earthen embankments caused by internal erosion. This technique uses the am...
متن کاملSeismic interferometry by crosscorrelation and by multidimensional deconvolution: a systematic comparison
Seismic interferometry, also known as Green’s function retrieval by crosscorrelation, has a wide range of applications, ranging from surface-wave tomography using ambient noise, to creating virtual sources for improved reflection seismology. Despite its successful applications, the crosscorrelation approach also has its limitations. The main underlying assumptions are that the medium is lossles...
متن کاملControlled source interferometry with noisy data
We investigate the effects of noise on controlled-source interferometry by multi-dimensional deconvolution (MDD) for diffusive electromagnetic (EM) fields and for seismic wavefields. An electromagnetic and a seismic dataset are modeled and decomposed into upand downwards decaying and upand downgoing fields, respectively. From the decomposed fields a reflection response can be retrieved using le...
متن کاملOn the relation between seismic interferometry and the simultaneoussource method
In seismic interferometry the response to a virtual source is created from responses to sequential transient or simultaneous noise sources. Most methods use crosscorrelation, but recently seismic interferometry by multidimensional deconvolution (MDD) has been proposed as well. In the simultaneous-source method (also known as blended acquisition), overlapping responses to sources with small time...
