چکیده

1. We have correlated measurements of colloid osmotic pressure with protein concentrations and albumin/globulin ratios. Plasma from normal rats of different genetic strains was used. 2. The Landis and Pappenheimer equation does not accurately predict colloid osmotic pressure properties of the normal rat plasma used, which had an albumin/globulin ratio of 0.74. Over the range 2-2-12-2 g of protein/100 ml, the measured colloid osmotic pressures vary between -5% and + 10% from the value predicted by the equation. 3. In Wistar-derived genetically hypertensive and normotensive rats, albumin/globulin ratios were higher than those in common Wistar rats. Owing to the presence of higher globulins. plasma proteins were higher in Wistar than spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats, and colloid osmotic pressure was identical in the three groups. 4. When common Sprague-Dawley rats were obtained from two ' different suppliers, their albumin/globulin ratios were found to be different. 5. As the difference in albumin/globulin ratio between human and rat plasma becomes more pronounced, predicting rat plasma colloid osmotic pressure from the Landis and Pappenheimer equation becomes less accurate. Environmental and/or genetic factors play a role in the albumin/globulin ratio found in normal healthy rats. 6. Therefore albumin/globulin ratios should be measured in each experimental situation. Equation for osmotic pressure of serum protein (fractions).

The colloid or protein osmotic pressure (Pi) is a function of protein molarity (linear) and of Donnan and other effects. Albumin is the major osmotic protein, but also globulins influence Pi. Equations based on concentrations of albumin and nonalbumin (globulin concentration + fibrinogen concentration) protein approximate Pi better than albumin alone. Globulins have a wide range of molecular we...

Colloid Osmotic Pressures of Serum Proteins

The albumin component is, by reason of size and net charge and concentration, chiefly responsible for plasmas osmotic activity ( 1) .2 The validity of Starling's hypothesis in the dynamics of water balance in conditions associated with hypoproteinemia has been the subject of considerable recent discussion. The basic experimental problems involved have been considered by some of us in other publ...

Osmotic Pressure Study of Protein Fractions in Normal and in Nephrotic Subjects

In serum of patients with nephrosis both albumin and globulin showed by osmotic pressure nearly double the molecular weights of normal albumin and globulin. In the urines of such patients, on the other hand, both proteins showed molecular weights lower even than in normal serum. The colloidal osmotic pressures were measured by the author's method at such dilutions that the van't Hoff law relati...

Investigations concerning the Changes in Serum Proteins during Immunization

On hyperimmunization of rabbits with pneumococcal vaccine, increase in the content of gamma globulin and fall of albumin in the serum are produced. In such hyperimmunized rabbits, investigations of the plasma volume, albumin degradation, and the distribution of the albumin intra- and extravascularly were undertaken by Sterling's method employing rabbit albumin labelled with I(131). The investig...

Stability of Colloid Osmotic Pressure of Serum Protein By

The work of earlier investigators, Govaerts (1), Barath (2), Cope (3), Peters et al. (4) and Kylin (5) has given the impression that the colloid osmotic pressure is not only lowered with decrease in serum protein but its specific pressure (pressure per unit of protein) is also diminished. The lowering of specific pressure has usually been related to a greater decrease in the albumin fraction of...
