چکیده

The deposition efficiency of unsteady inhalation is investigated in present study by using computational fluid dynamics techniques. Comparison with steady inhalation is also discussed. The inspiratory cycle of a realistic unsteady inhalation profile was applied at the outlet of nasopharynx, which has the maximum flow rate of 40.3L/min. Aerodynamic particle sizes of 5μm and 20μm were studied in order to reflect a low and high Stokes numbered particle, respectively. Three profiles of particle deposition efficiency in the nasal cavity versus time are presented. In general, the total deposition of 5μm was found much less than 20μm particle. Lower deposition was achieved for 5μm as inhalation accelerates. The first 0.2 second of the inspiratory cycle was found to be a crucial period as majority of particles deposited during the period. These particle sizes gave the highest deposition efficiency in the middle region of the nasal cavity. However, the distribution changed for large particle under steady inhalation. Comparing with its equivalent steady inhalation flow rate, the unsteady inhalation had lower deposition efficiency for both particle sizes.

CFD Study of the Air Flow Field and Particle Deposition in the Human Nasal Cavity

The nasal cavity is a main part of the human upper airway, and it has the important functions of respiration, heating and humidifying the inhaled air. The properties of the air flow in the nasal cavity may contribute to the occurrence of respiratory disease. In addition, particles are filtered by the nasal cavity. This function prevents toxic particles to enter into the human body, but it also ...

Local Deposition Sites of Drug Particles in a Human Nasal Cavity

INTRODUCTION ABSTRACT Particle depositional studies from nasal sprays are important for efficient drug delivery. The main influences on deposition involve the nasal cavity geometry and the nasal spray device of which its parameters are controlled by the product design. It is known that larger particle sizes (>>10μm) at a flow rate of 333 ml/s impact in the anterior portion of the nose, leaving ...

Modelling the inhalation of drug particles in a human nasal cavity

A human nasal cavity was reconstructed from CT scans to make a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model. With this model, fluid flow and inhalation of aerosol analysis can be investigated. The surface of the interior nasal cavity is lined with highly vascularised mucosa which provides a means for direct drug delivery into the blood stream. Typical sprayed particles from a nasal spray device pro...
