LDRD Final Report: Physical Simulation of Nonisothermal Multiphase Multicomponent Flow in Porous Media
نویسندگان
چکیده
This document reports on the accomplishments of a laboratory-directed research and development (LDRD) project whose objective was to initiate a research program for developing a fundamental understanding of multiphase multicomponent subsurface transport in heterogeneous porous media and to develop parallel processing computational tools for numerical simulation of such problems. The main achievement of this project was the successful development of a general-purpose, unstructured grid, multiphase thermal simulator for subsurface transport in heterogeneous porous media implemented for use on massively parallel (MP) computers via message-passing and domain decomposition techniques. Tile numerical platform provides an excellent base for new and continuing project development in areas of current interest to SNL and the DOE complex including, subsurface nuclear waste disposal and cleanup, groundwater availability and contamination studies, fuel-spill transport for accident analysis, and DNAPL transport and remediation.

متن کاملAn efficient parallel-computing method for modeling nonisothermal multiphase flow and multicomponent transport in porous and fractured media
This paper presents an efficient massively parallel scheme for modeling large-scale multiphase flow, multicomponent transport and heat transfer in porous and fractured reservoirs. The new scheme is implemented into a parallel version of the TOUGH2 code and the numerical performance is tested on a Cray T3E-900 (a distributed-memory parallel computer with 692 processors) and IBM RS/6000 SP (a dis...
متن کاملGas-liquid Relative Permeability Estimation in 2D Porous Media by Lattice Boltzmann Method: Low Viscosity Ratio 2D LBM Relative Permeability
This work is a primary achievement in studying the CO2 and N2–oil systems. To predict gas-liquid relative permeability curves, a Shan-Chen type multicomponent multiphase lattice Boltzmann model for two-phase flow through 2D porous media is developed. Periodic and bounce back boundary conditions are applied to the model with the Guo scheme for the external body force (i.e.,...
متن کاملUpscaling of Transport Equations for Multiphase and Multicomponent Flows
In this paper we discuss upscaling of immiscible multiphase and miscible multicomponent flow and transport in heterogeneous porous media. The discussion presented in the paper summarizes the results of in Upscaled Modeling in Multiphase Flow Applications by Ginting et al. (2004) and in Upscaling of Multiphase and Multicomponent Flow by Ginting et al. (2006). Perturbation approaches are used to ...
متن کاملParallel Simulation of Multiphase/Multicomponent Flow Models
The simulation of flow in porous media is a computationally demanding task. Thermodynamical equilibrium calculations and complex, heterogeneous geological structures normally gives a multiphysics/multidomain problem to solve. Thus, efficient solution methods are needed. The research simulator Athena is a 3D, multiphase, multicomponent, porous media flow simulator. A parallel version of the simu...
