چکیده

Consistency sounds like something to strive for. After all, who would strive for inconsistency? Consistency is widely praised in guidelines and principles, but with some scrutiny, it becomes clear that consistency is hard to define and measure. Oellogg discusses several dimensions of consistency (including platform/devices) [kellT7, kellTU] and both Oellogg and Grudin [grudTU] note that a design can be internally consistent within an application, or externally consistent with other applications. Grudin sums it up well by noting: ZThus, there may be no simple approach to determining the relative significance of consistency along various dimensions and levels.Z (p.1172) Caulton and Dye [caulU7] concluded that consistency between applications is less important that task-appropriateness when applications are specialized.

Explanation and Diagnosis Services for Unsatisfiability and Inconsistency in Description Logics

Explanation and Diagnosis Services for Unsatisfiability and Inconsistency in Description Logics Xi Deng, Ph.D. Concordia University, 2010 Description Logics (DLs) are a family of knowledge representation formalisms with formal semantics and well understood computational complexities. In recent years, they have found applications in many domains, including domain modeling, software engineering, ...

Define Hybrid Class Resolving Disjointness due to Subsumption

The pattern “Define Hybrid Class Resolving Disjointness due to Subsumption” is proposed as a Logical Ontology Design Pattern (Logical OP) solving a problem of disjointness inconsistency caused by a subsumption relation. Further away from solving design problems where the primitives of the representation language do not directly support certain logical constructs, this pattern helps resolving a ...

Dealing with Inconsistency When Combining Ontologies and Rules Using DL-Programs

Description Logic Programs (DL-programs) have been introduced to combine ontological and rule-based reasoning in the context of the Semantic Web. A DL-program loosely combines a Description Logic (DL) ontology with a non-monotonic logic program (LP) such that dedicated atoms in the LP, called DL-atoms, allow for a bidirectional flow of knowledge between the two components. Unfortunately, the in...

Dfpd 00/th/52 an Order Parameter Reconciling Abelian and Center Dominance in Su(2) Yang–mills Theory

We analyze previously proposed order parameters for the confinement deconfinement transition in lattice SU(2) Yang–Mills theory, defined as vacuum expectation value (v.e.v.) of monopole fields in abelian projection gauges. We show that they exhibit some inconsistency in the treatment of small scales, due to a violation of Dirac quantization condition for fluxes. We propose a new order parameter...

Logic of the Preface Paradox

The preface paradox is the apparent pragmatic inconsistency that occurs when the author of a book declares in its preface that despite believing that it is highly probable that everything the book maintains is true it is also highly probable that the book contains at least some errors. The preface paradox has often been presented as an example of a logically inconsistent belief that it is never...
