Ahrensite, γ-Fe2SiO4, a new shock-metamorphic mineral from the Tissint meteorite: implications for the Tissint shock event on Mars

چکیده
Ahrensite (IMA 2013-028), γ-Fe2SiO4, is the natural Fe-analog of the silicate-spinel ringwoodite (γ-Mg2SiO4). It occurs in the Tissint Martian meteorite, where it forms through the transformation of the fayalite-rich rims of olivine megacrysts or Fe-rich microphenocrysts in contact with shock melt pockets. We report the first comprehensive set of crystallographic, spectroscopic, and quantitative chemical analysis of type ahrensite, and show that concentrations of ferric iron and inversion in the type material of this newly approved mineral are negligible. We also report the occurrence of nanocrystalline ringwoodite in strained olivine and establish correlations between grain size and distance from melt pockets. The ahrensite and ringwoodite crystals show no preferred orientation, consistent with random

Effects of Shock and Martian Alteration on Tissint Hydrogen Isotope Ratios and Water Content
The Tissint meteorite, a picritic shergottite, fell to Earth in Morocco on the 18th of July 2011, and is only the fifth Martian meteorite witnessed to fall. Hydrogen isotope ratios and water contents are variable within different minerals in Tissint. Ringwoodite and shock melt pockets contain elevated D/H ratios relative to terrestrial values (dD = 761–4224‰). These high ratios in recrystallize...
متن کاملMineral chemistry of the Tissint meteorite: Indications of two-stage crystallization in a closed system
The Tissint meteorite is a geochemically depleted, olivine-phyric shergottite. Olivine megacrysts contain 300–600 lm cores with uniform Mg# (~80 1) followed by concentric zones of Fe-enrichment toward the rims. We applied a number of tests to distinguish the relationship of these megacrysts to the host rock. Major and trace element compositions of the Mg-rich core in olivine are in equilibrium ...

Introduction: The recently acquired meteorite Tissint is the first recognized fall of a depleted shergottite. Other such shergottites were found in the hot deserts (e.g., NWA 1195, Dhofar 019, DAG 476) or in the Antarctic cold desert (e.g., QUE 94201, Y980459) and, in many cases, have disturbed isotopic systematics due to terrestrial contamination [1-4]. Tissint represents the freshest sample o...

متن کاملHigh-temperature Mars-to-Earth transfer of meteorite ALH84001
Martian meteorites provide crucial insights into Martian evolution and interplanetary mass transfer, including the potential for exogenesis. ALH84001 is the oldest Martian meteorite discovered so far, and has been used to derive important conclusions about Martian surface temperatures and very low-temperature Mars-to-Earth transfer. To better constrain the thermal evolution and shock metamorphi...
