world generally. Wilhelm Boeck was born at Kongsberg in 1808, became a student in 1S27. Doctor in 1831; he was elected member of the Storthing in 1845 and Professor at the University in 1846. Boeck's name and scientific merits stand in special connexion witli his investigation of two of the most terrible forms of disease which have afflicted and still afflict the human race. Of one of these, Leprosy, Boeck was among the most renowned students. In 1840 he travelled, together with his colleague Dr. Danielssen, from Bergen, where he had devoted some time to preparatory study, over England, France and Italy to Greece, in which country, (after Norway) the disease had its greatest extension. A comprehensive and remarkable work on this disease, composed by Boeck in conjunction with Dr. Danielssen, came out in 1847 and excited the admiration of the scientific world no less by its text than by the accompanying atlas with its excellent illustrations of the forms of disease. The work wa3 translated into French in 1848, and was, by one of the great medical authorities of the time, Dr. Rayer, submitted to the French Academy, who rewarded it with the so-called Prix Monthyon, the amount of which, 2.000 fcs. was presented by the authors to the univer-
