Lawrence-Berkeley Laboratory, Berkeley, CA 94720, U.S.A. Abstract The recent experimental advances in cold atomic traps have induced a great amount of interest in fields from condensed matter to particle physics, including approaches and prospects from the theoretical point of view. In this work we investigate the general properties and the ground state of an asymmetrical dilute gas of cold fermionic atoms, formed by two particle species having different densities. We have show in a recent paper, that a mixed phase composed of normal and superfluid components is the energetically favored ground state of such a cold fermionic system. Here we extend the analysis and verify that in fact, the mixed phase is the preferred ground state of an asymmetrical superfluid in various situatiations. We predict that the mixed phase can serve as a way of detecting superfluidity and estimating the magnitude of the gap parameter in asymmetrical fermionic systems.

Prospect of creating a composite fermi/bose superfluid
We show that composite fermi/bose superfluids can be created in coldatom traps by employing a Feshbach resonance or coherent photoassociation. The bosonic molecular condensate created in this way implies a new fermion pairing mechanism associated with the exchange of fermion pairs between the molecular condensate and an atomic fermion superfluid. We predict macroscopically coherent, Josephson-l...

For the Cooper/BCS model interaction in superconductors (SCs) it is shown: a) how BCS-Bose crossover picture transition temperatures Tc, defined self-consistently by both the gap and fermion-number equations, require unphysically large couplings to differ significantly from the Tc of ordinary BCS theory defined without the number equation since here the chemical potential is assumed equal to th...
متن کاملQuantum dynamics, particle delocalization and instability of Mott states: the effect of fermion–boson conversion on Mott states
We study the quantum dynamics of superfluids of bosons hybridized with Cooper pairs near Feshbach resonances and the influence of fermion–boson conversion on Mott states. We derive a set of equations of motion which describe novel low energy dynamics in superfluids and obtain a new distinct branch of gapped collective modes in superfluids which involve anti-symmetric phase oscillations in fermi...
متن کاملMany-body characterization of particle-conserving topological superfluids.
What distinguishes trivial superfluids from topological superfluids in interacting many-body systems where the number of particles is conserved? Building on a class of integrable pairing Hamiltonians, we present a number-conserving, interacting variation of the Kitaev model, the Richardson-Gaudin-Kitaev chain, that remains exactly solvable for periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions. Our ...
متن کاملFractional excitation in one-dimensional two species fermionic superfluids
We study one-dimensional two-species fermionic superfluids with order parameter twisted by an angle φ at the two ends. By solving the corresponding Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equation, we obtain the U(1) soliton state which turns out to carry φS/(2π) spin, where S is the spin of single fermion. For Z2 soliton with φ = π, the localized state carries only 1/2 of a single fermion spin. To conserve the t...
