A New Hipposiderid Genus (microchiroptera) from an Early Miocene Bat Community in Australia

چکیده
A new genus and species of hipposiderid bat is described from an early Miocene cave deposit (Bitesantennary Site) in the Riversleigh World Heritage fossil property, northern Australia. Eight hipposiderid genera are now recorded from Riversleigh’s Miocene sediments: Hipposideros, Brachipposideros, Rhinonycteris, Riversleigha, Xenorhinos, Miophyllorhina, Archerops and Brevipalatus gen. nov. The new taxon appears to be most closely related to Australian endemic Rhinonycteris and Brachipposideros species, but its autapomorphically very short palate distinguishes it from other members of this relatively plesiomorphic group. It is one of eight hipposiderid species recovered from the Bitesantennary Site deposit, and one of 11 recorded from Riversleigh’s early Miocene sediments. Compared with modern bat faunas, the early Miocene Riversleigh bat community differs strikingly in its high hipposiderid diversity but may differ less in its overall trophic structure.

The upper dentition of two Australian early Miocene mystacinids, Icarops paradox and I. aenae, from Riversleigh, Queensland, are described for the first time. Also recognised is a late Oligocene mystacinid from Lake Palankarinna, South Australia. The new fossils help refine understanding about the evolutionary history of mystacinids in Australia, including their temporal and geographical range,...

The New Zealand endemic bat family Mystacinidae comprises just two Recent species referred to a single genus, Mystacina. The family was once more diverse and widespread, with an additional six extinct taxa recorded from Australia and New Zealand. Here, a new mystacinid is described from the early Miocene (19-16 Ma) St Bathans Fauna of Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand. It is the first pr...
متن کاملCross sectional survey of human-bat interaction in Australia: public health implications
BACKGROUND Flying foxes (megachiroptera) and insectivorous microbats (microchiroptera) are the known reservoirs for a range of recently emerged, highly pathogenic viruses. In Australia there is public health concern relating to bats' role as reservoirs of Australian Bat Lyssavirus (ABLV), which has clinical features identical to classical rabies. Three deaths from ABLV have occurred in Australi...
متن کاملNovel Paramyxoviruses in Free-Ranging European Bats
The zoonotic potential of paramyxoviruses is particularly demonstrated by their broad host range like the highly pathogenic Hendra and Nipah viruses originating from bats. But while so far all bat-borne paramyxoviruses have been identified in fruit bats across Africa, Australia, South America, and Asia, we describe the detection and characterization of the first paramyxoviruses in free-ranging ...

The bat genus Myotis is represented by 120+ living species and 40+ extinct species and is found on every continent except Antarctica. The time of divergence of Myotis has been contentious as has the time and place of origin of its encompassing group the Vespertilionidae, the most diverse (450+ species) and widely distributed extant bat family. Fossil Myotis species are common, especially in Eur...
