InterGrid: A Case for Internetworking of Islands of Grids

چکیده
Over the last few years, several Grids have been set up to share resources such as computers, data, and instruments to enable collaborative research. These Grids follow models and heterogeneous policies restricted by the requirements of e-Science applications for which they have been created, which has resulted in islands of Grids. A structure that allows Grids to grow in a scalable manner by allowing peering between Grids is still not possible. There has been a profound interest in providing interoperability between different Grids. In this paper, we propose a model that (a) promotes interlinking of islands of Grids through peering arrangements to enable inter-Grid resource sharing; (b) provides a scalable structure for Grids that allow them to interconnect with one another and grow in a sustainable way; (c) creates a global cyberinfrastructure to support e-Science and eBusiness applications. This work identifies the need for a business ecosystem, called the InterGrid, which promotes the internetworking of islands of Grids and allows Grids to grow in a similar way as the Internet. We examine current global systems that grow by enabling networks of networks and propose an architecture for the InterGrid. The architecture is composed of InterGrid Gateways responsible for managing peering arrangements between Grids. We discuss the main components of the architecture and present a research agenda to enable the InterGrid vision.

InterGrid: a case for internetworking islands of Grids
Over the last few years, several nations around the world have set up Grids to share resources such as computers, data, and instruments to enable collaborative science, engineering, and business applications. These Grids follow a restricted organizational model wherein a Virtual Organization (VO) is created for a specific collaboration and all interactions such as resource sharing are limited t...
متن کاملA Resource Exchange Mechanism for Peak Load Management in InterGrid Environments
The potential of the Grid computing paradigm has led to the creation of several regional and national Grid environments. These environments are, however, like “Grid islands” with no resource sharing between them. We have presented an architecture to enable internetworking of Grids for resource sharing based on peering arrangements between Grids. This architecture and related mechanisms and poli...
متن کاملThe Finite Difference Based Fast Adaptive Composite Grid Method
The fast adaptive composite grid (FAC) method is an iterative method for solving discrete boundary value problems on composite grids. McCormick introduced the method in [10J and considered the convergence behaviour for discrete problems resulting from finite volume element discretiza-tion on composite grids. In this paper we consider discrete problems resulting from finite difference discretiza...
متن کاملOverlapping Unstructured Grids
A general overlapping grid procedure for unstructured grids has been developed. A generalized `dominant mesh criterion' that includes element size and distance to walls is used to determine the intergrid interpolation. A near-optimal algorithm to determine the closest distance of a point to a wall is given, together with the proper treatment of background grids and grids that are partially outs...
متن کاملBuilding a Virtualized Distributed Computing Infrastructure by Harnessing Grid and Cloud Technologies
In this article, we present the realization of a system, termed as InterGrid, for interconnecting distributed computing infrastructures by harnessing virtual machines. The InterGrid aims to provide an execution environment for running applications on top of the interconnected infrastructures. The system uses virtual machines as the building blocks to construct execution environments that span m...
