چکیده

The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) requires low noise SIS receivers for frequencies from about 80 GHz to 950 GHz with a very large IF bandwidth (8 GHz SSB upper or lower sideband, 8 GHz DSB or 4 GHz dual sideband, upper and lower sideband). Since there will be a large number of antennas in the array (currently 64), additional requirements such as high reliability, low cost, and the production of a relatively large number of mixers have to be addressed. In this paper we report the results of a waveguide mixer with a fixed backshort for ALMA band 9 (602 – 720 GHz). The mixer is based on standard Nb/AlOx/Nb SIS junction technology. This mixer was tested with a wide band IF amplifier with and without an isolator. Mixer measurement results for different LO frequencies across a wide IF band (4-12) GHz) will be presented. DSB Receiver noise across the both RF and IF band was measured, and receiver noise as low as 136 K at 650 GHz was demonstrated over the wideband IF. Finally, the possibility of a small production series of such a mixer is discussed with results on a first batch of mixer-blocks will be presented.

Development of a 385 - 500 GHz SIS Mixer for ALMA Band 8

In this paper, we report on the design and experimental results of a fix-tuned Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) mixer for Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) band 8 (385-500GHz) receivers. Nb-based SIS junctions of a current density of 10kA/cm and one micrometer size (fabricated with a two-step lift-off process) are employed to accomplish the ALMA receiver specifica...

A Wide-bandwidth, Low-noise Sis Receiver Design for Millimeter and Submillimeter Wavelengths

In principle, millimeter and submillimeter heterodyne receivers using state-of-the-art SIS detectors are capable of extremely large instantaneous bandwidths with noise temperatures within a few Kelvin of the quantum limit. We are applying modern design tools, such as 3D electromagnetic simulators and Caltech’s SuperMix SIS analysis package, to develop a new generation of waveguide SIS mixers wi...

ALMA Memo 498 14 May 2004 The ALMA Band 6 ( 211 - 275 GHz ) Sideband - Separating SIS Mixer - Preamplifier

The ALMA Band 6 (211-275 GHz) receivers use sideband-separating SIS mixer-preamplifiers with dual 4-12 GHz IF outputs. The sideband-separating mixers are of the phasing type, with the LO driving two component mixers in-phase and the RF signal connected to the mixers through a quadrature hybrid. The IF outputs of the mixers are amplified, then combined in a quadrature hybrid which separates the ...

A Fixed-Tuned SIS Mixer with Ultra-Wide-Band IF and Quantum-Limited Sensitivity for ALMA Band 3 (84-116 GHz) Receivers

This paper describes an 84-116 GHz Nb/Al-oxide/Nb SIS mixer with multi-octave IF bandwidth and quantum-limited sensitivity. The mixer can be integrated with a three-stage 4-12 GHz HFET preamplifier or fitted with a coaxial connector for operation with an external isolator and IF amplifier. An 84-116 GHz receiver using the mixer with an integrated 4-12 GHz HFET preamplifier has a double sideband...

Low-Noise THz SIS Mixers Incorporating NbTiN/SiO2/Al and Al/SiO2/Al Tuning Circuits

The development of the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) requires lownoise SIS mixers for frequencies up to 1.25 THz. Past work has shown that the integration of a NbTiN/SiO2/Al tuning circuit with standard Nb SIS junctions enables the development of state-of-the-art heterodyne receivers for frequencies up to at least 1 THz [1-3]. Following from the results of this previous work...
