چکیده

As networks become an essential ingredient of modern business and government systems, there is an increasing demand for specialization for network services that can be tailored to the needs of individual organizations, especially for wide-area network connectivity. Currently, Internet service providers can only offer their clients very limited forms of customization simply because existing wide-area network resource management technologies do not support the level of flexibility and generality as required by user-specific or even application-specific adaptation. This project proposes to design, implement, and evaluate a network resource virtualization system called Sago, which allows multiple virtual networks to be overlaid on a single physical network, each having a unique network topology, per-virtual-link bandwidth guarantee, an overall network reliability characteristic, and even its own data-plane/control-plane processing functions. Sago includes a novel network resource allocation algorithm that takes into account both physical network topology and dynamic traffic demands, a network-wide fault tolerance mechanism that supports both node-level and link-level fault tolerance, and an integrated CPU/network scheduler that provides performance protection among virtual networks that have different control-plane or data-plane processing but share the same physical packet processing engines. The technologies developed in the Sago project are expected to become important building blocks for real-time content distribution networks, end-to-end quality of service guarantee over global corporate intranets, and application-specific adaptation of wide-area network services.

ERAS: Efficient, Robust, Adaptive, and Scalable Service Composition in Overlay Networks

The importance of the component service model has been widely recognized in the Internet community due to its high flexibility in creating customized applications from primitive services in a plug-and-play manner. Deployment of such a service model in the wide area networks spawns a new type of routing problem QoS service-added routing, that is far more complex than the traditional QoS routing ...

Structuring topologically aware overlay networks using domain names

Overlay networks are application layer systems which facilitate users in performing distributed functions such as searches over the contents of other users. An important problem in such networks is that the connections among peers are arbitrary, leading in that way to a topology structure which does not match the underlying physical topology. This topology mismatch leads to large user experienc...

Dynamic Resource Management in SDN-based Virtualized Networks

Network virtualization allows for an abstraction between user and physical resources by letting a given physical infrastructure to be shared by multiple service providers. However, network virtualization presents some challenges, such as, efficient resource management, fast provisioning and scalability. By separating a network’s control logic from the underlying routers and switches, software d...

Global Flow Control for Wide Area Overlay Networks: A Cost-Benefit Approach

This paper presents a flow control protocol for multi-sender multi-group multicast and unicast in wide area overlay networks. The protocol is analytically grounded and achieves real world goals, such as simplicity, fairness and minimal resource usage. Flows are regulated based on the “opportunity” costs of network resources used and the benefit provided by the flow. In contrast to existing wind...
