Lasing in subwavelength semiconductor nanopatches

چکیده
Subwavelength semiconductor nanopatch lasers were analyzed, fabricated and characterized. Lasing was achieved in cylindrical and rectangular metallodielectric nanopatch geometries. The two smallest moderate quality factor modes of cylindrical cavities, the ‘electric-’ and ‘magnetic-’ dipole-like modes, successfully lased with physical volumes as small as 0.75 (λ0/n). Polarization control in nanopatch geometries is successfully demonstrated in anisotropic rectangular nanopatch structures.

Subwavelength plasmonic lasing from a semiconductor nanodisk with silver nanopan cavity.
We report the experimental demonstration of an optically pumped silver-nanopan plasmonic laser with a subwavelength mode volume of 0.56(lambda/2n)(3). The lasing mode is clearly identified as a whispering-gallery plasmonic mode confined at the bottom of the silver nanopan from measurements of the spectrum, mode image, and polarization state, as well as agreement with numerical simulations. In a...

Disk-shaped semiconductor nanostructures provide enhanced architectures for low-threshold whispering gallery mode (WGM) lasing with the potential for on-chip nanophotonic integration. Unlike cavities that lase via Fabry-Perot modes, WGM structures utilize low-loss, total internal reflection of the optical mode along the circumference of the structure, which effectively reduces the volume of gai...

We report on near infrared semiconductor nanopatch lasers with subwavelength-scale physical dimensions (0.019 cubic wavelengths) and effective mode volumes (0.0017 cubic wavelengths). We observe lasing in the two most fundamental optical modes which resemble oscillating electrical and magnetic dipoles. The ultra-small laser volume is achieved with the presence of nanoscale metal patches which s...

This article focuses on one-dimensional (1D) semiconductor subwavelength optical elements and assesses their potential use as active and passive components in photonic devices. An updated overview of their optical properties, including spontaneous emission, ultrafast carrier dynamics, cavity resonance feedback (lasing), photodetection, and waveguiding, is provided. The ability to physically man...
متن کاملSurface-plasmon mode hybridization in subwavelength microdisk lasers
Hybridization of surface-plasmon and dielectric waveguide whispering-gallery modes are demonstrated in a semiconductor microdisk laser cavity of subwavelength proportions. A metal layer is deposited on top of the semiconductor microdisk, the radius of which is systematically varied to enable mode hybridization between surface-plasmon and dielectric modes. The anticrossing behavior of the two ca...
