چکیده
Objective measures of musical tempo are linked to a particular metrical pulse, and this is most likely true for subjective tempo as well. Therefore, tapping along with a rhythm should be predictive of relative tempo judgments. The difficulty of such judgments may lie in the choice of a particular metrical level as the referent. Multiple levels may compete and create ambiguity. Analogies are drawn with pitch perception from certain types of complex tones. Submitted 2011 January 19; accepted 2011 February 14.

Tactus ≠ Tempo: Some Dissociations Between Attentional Focus, Motor Behavior, and Tempo Judgment
Three experiments explored the relationships between surface rhythmic activity, tactus or beat rate, attentional focus, sensorimotor synchronization (tapping), and tempo perception. All involved a rhythmic standard followed by a comparison; the experimental task was a judgment of “slower, same, or faster.” In Experiment 1 participants simply judged relative speed; they focused on the beat level...
متن کاملDifferences in Metrical Structure Confound Tempo Judgments
Musical tempo is usually regarded as simply the rate of the tactus or beat, yet most rhythms involve multiple, concurrent periodicities. Two experiments were conducted to investigate relations between the absolute rate of the tactus versus a more global sense of speed via a tempo discrimination task involving typical rhythmic patterns. Stimulus rhythms in 4/4 meter were presented at two tempos ...
متن کاملCyclic tempogram - A mid-level tempo representation for musicsignals
The extraction of local tempo and beat information from audio recordings constitutes a challenging task, particularly for music that reveals significant tempo variations. Furthermore, the existence of various pulse levels such as measure, tactus, and tatum often makes the determination of absolute tempo problematic. In this paper, we present a robust mid-level representation that encodes local ...
متن کاملEffect of Music Tempo on Attentional Focus and Perceived Exertion during Self-selected Paced Walking
This study investigated the influence of music on the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and attentional focus during walking at a self-selected pace. Fifteen overweight and obese women volunteered to participate in the study. They underwent four sessions: the first for incremental maximal test and anthropometric measurement followed by three experimental sessions. After the first session, they...
متن کاملCombination of Audio Tempo Estimation Approaches
This paper describes a tempo estimation algorithm submitted to the MIREX 2011, and is an extension of the work presented in [2]. Using the tempo estimation results from four different approaches (BeatIt, Ellis, Davies and MPEG7-XM), we use a heuristic strategy to obtain the slow and fast tempo from audio music combinig their results, based on the hypothesis that the tatum and tactus tempo hiera...
