Controlled Bandwidth Allocation for Wireless Networks

The problem of controlled bandwidth allocation has been extensively studied for wired domain. But very little attention has been paid for wired-cum-wireless network topologies. This paper focuses on issues that makes a wireless scenario different from a wired one and proposes novel mechanisms for ensuring user-defined shares to different traffic flows. We show that most of the existing scheduling policies used for fair share that work very well in wired networks fail to achieve reasonable fairness in case of wired-cum-wireless domain. A whole spectrum of control mechanisms that can be used and a detailed comparison of each of the mechanisms, with simulation results, is presented. A novel way of quantifying fairness by means of fairness numbers is presented and the mechanisms are compared based on the fairness number they achieve.
